In this paper we study a first-order primal-dual algorithm for non-smooth convex optimization problems with known saddle-point structure. We prove convergence to a saddle-point with rate O(1/N) in finite dimensions for the complete class of problems. We further show accelerations of the proposed algorithm to yield improved rates on problems with some degree of smoothness. In particular we show that we can achieve O(1/N 2) convergence on problems, where the primal or the dual objective is uniformly convex, and we can show linear convergence, i.e. O(? N ) for some ??(0,1), on smooth problems. The wide applicability of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on several imaging problems such as image denoising, image deconvolution, image inpainting, motion estimation and multi-label image segmentation.

A parallel sweeping preconditioner for high frequency heterogeneous 3D Helmholtz equations

The conventional velocity scan can be computationally expensive for large-scale seismic data sets, particularly when the presence of anisotropy requires multiparameter scanning. We introduce a fast algorithm for 3D azimuthally anisotropic velocity scan by generalizing the previously proposed 2D butterfly algorithm for hyperbolic Radon transforms. To compute semblance in a two-parameter residual moveout domain, the numerical complexity of our algorithm is roughly O(N 3 log N) as opposed to O(N 5 ) of the straightforward velocity scan, with N being the representative of the number of points in a particular dimension of either data space or parameter space. Synthetic and field data examples demonstrate the superior efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

A fast algorithm for 3D azimuthally anisotropic velocity scan

This paper introduces the synchrosqueezed curvelet transform as an optimal tool for 2D mode decomposition of wavefronts or banded wave-like components. The synchrosqueezed curvelet transform consists of a generalized curvelet transform with application dependent geometric scaling parameters, and a synchrosqueezing technique for a sharpened phase space representation. In the case of a superposition of banded wave-like components with well-separated wave-vectors, it is proved that the synchrosqueezed curvelet transform is capable of recognizing each component and precisely estimating local wave-vectors. A discrete analogue of the continuous transform and several clustering models for decomposition are proposed in detail. Some numerical examples with synthetic and real data are provided to demonstrate the above properties of the proposed transform.

Synchrosqueezed Curvelet Transform for 2D Mode Decomposition

This paper introduces a directional multiscale algorithm for the two dimensional $N$-body problem of the Helmholtz kernel with applications to high frequency scattering. The algorithm follows the approach in [Engquist and Ying, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, 29 (4), 2007] where the three dimensional case was studied. The main observation is that, for two regions that follow a directional parabolic geometric configuration, the interaction between the points in these two regions through the Helmholtz kernel is approximately low rank. We propose an improved randomized procedure for generating the low rank representations. Based on these representations, we organize the computation of the far field interaction in a multidirectional and multiscale way to achieve maximum efficiency. The proposed algorithm is accurate and has the optimal $O(N\log N)$ complexity for problems from two dimensional scattering applications. We present numerical results for several test examples to illustrate the algorithm and its application to two dimensional high frequency scattering problems.

Fast Directional Computation for the High Frequency Helmholtz Kernel in Two Dimensions

This paper proposes a new factorization algorithm for computing the phase factors of quantum signal processing. The proposed algorithm avoids root finding of high degree polynomials by using a key step of Prony's method and is numerically stable in the double precision arithmetics. Experimental results are reported for Hamiltonian simulation, eigenstate filtering, matrix inversion, and Fermi-Dirac operator.
