Self-assembled peptide and protein amyloid nanostructures have traditionally been considered only as pathological aggregates implicated in human neurodegenerative diseases. In more recent times, these nanostructures have found interesting applications as advanced materials in biomedicine, tissue engineering, renewable energy, environmental science, nanotechnology and material science, to name only a few fields. In all these applications, the final function depends on: (i) the specific mechanisms of protein aggregation, (ii) the hierarchical structure of the protein and peptide amyloids from the atomistic to mesoscopic length scales and (iii) the physical properties of the amyloids in the context of their surrounding environment (biological or artificial). In this review, we will discuss recent progress made in the field of functional and artificial amyloids and highlight connections between protein/peptide folding, unfolding and aggregation mechanisms, with the resulting amyloid structure and functionality. We also highlight current advances in the design and synthesis of amyloid-based biological and functional materials and identify new potential fields in which amyloid-based structures promise new breakthroughs.

Self-assembling peptide and protein amyloids: from structure to tailored function in nanotechnology

Biological materials have robust hierarchical structures capable of specialized functions and the incorporation of natural biologically active components, which have been finely tuned through millions of years of evolution. These highly efficient architectural designs afford remarkable transport and mechanical properties, which render them attractive candidates for flexible electronic sensing technologies. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental aspects and applications of biological materials for flexible electronic devices and discusses various classes of biological materials by describing their unique structures and functions. We discuss the effect of the biological activity of biological materials on the improved properties in detail, because this effect overcomes the limited bioavailability and restricted morphology of materials generally encountered in traditional flexible electronic devices. We also summarize various approaches for the design and functionalization of natural materials and their applications in flexible electronic devices for use in biomedical, electron, energy, environmental and optical fields. Finally, we provide new insights and perspectives to further describe trends for future generations of biological materials, which are likely to be critical components (building blocks or elements) in future flexible electronics.

New insights and perspectives into biological materials for flexible electronics

Antibacterial coatings that eliminate initial bacterial attachment and prevent subsequent biofilm formation are essential in a number of applications, especially implanted medical devices. Although various approaches, including bacteria-repelling and bacteria-killing mechanisms, have been developed, none of them have been entirely successful due to their inherent drawbacks. In recent years, antibacterial coatings that are responsive to the bacterial microenvironment, that possess two or more killing mechanisms, or that have triggered-cleaning capability have emerged as promising solutions for bacterial infection and contamination problems. This review focuses on recent progress on three types of such responsive and synergistic antibacterial coatings, including i) self-defensive antibacterial coatings, which can "turn on" biocidal activity in response to a bacteria-containing microenvironment; ii) synergistic antibacterial coatings, which possess two or more killing mechanisms that interact synergistically to reinforce each other; and iii) smart "kill-and-release" antibacterial coatings, which can switch functionality between bacteria killing and bacteria releasing under a proper stimulus. The design principles and potential applications of these coatings are discussed and a brief perspective on remaining challenges and future research directions is presented.

Responsive and Synergistic Antibacterial Coatings: Fighting against Bacteria in a Smart and Effective Way.

The use of antimicrobial materials, for example, silver nanoparticles, has been a cause for concern because they often exert an adverse effect on environmental and safety during their preparation and use. In this study, we report a class of green antimicrobial coating based on a supramolecular assembly of a protein extracted from daily food, without the addition of any other hazardous agents. It is found that a self-assembled nanofilm by mere hen egg white lysozyme has durable in vitro and in vivo broad-spectrum antimicrobial efficacy against Gram-positive/negative and fungi. Such enhanced antimicrobial capability over native lysozyme is attributed to a synergistic combination of positive charge and hydrophobic amino acid residues enriched on polymeric aggregates in the lysozyme nanofilm. An Environmentally Benign Antimicrobial Coating Based on a Protein Supramolecular Assembly

Nanofibrillar forms of proteins were initially recognized in the context of pathology, but more recently have been discovered in a range of functional roles in nature, including as active catalytic scaffolds and bacterial coatings. Here we show that protein nanofibrils can be used to form the basis of monodisperse microgels and gel shells composed of naturally occurring proteins. We explore the potential of these protein microgels to act as drug carrier agents, and demonstrate the controlled release of four different encapsulated drug-like small molecules, as well as the component proteins themselves. Furthermore, we show that protein nanofibril self-assembly can continue after the initial formation of the microgel particles, and that this process results in active materials with network densities that can be modulated in situ. We demonstrate that these materials are nontoxic to human cells and that they can be used to enhance the efficacy of antibiotics relative to delivery in homogeneous solution. Because of the biocompatibility and biodegradability of natural proteins used in the fabrication of the microgels, as well as their ability to control the release of small molecules and biopolymers, protein nanofibril microgels represent a promising class of functional artificial multiscale materials generated from natural building blocks.

The invention discloses a method for performing metal electroless deposition based on a lysozyme two-dimension nano-film. The method includes the steps that first, a layer of lysozyme two-dimension nano-film is formed on the surface of a substrate through phase transformation of lysozyme; then, the lysozyme two-dimension nano-film is used for adsorbing a catalyst; next, the substrate with the surface adsorbing the catalyst is immersed in a metal electroless deposition solution so that metal can deposit on the surface of the substrate. According to the method, metal electroless deposition is performed based on the lysozyme two-dimension nano-film, so that the substrate selectivity is improved; besides, the lysozyme two-dimension nano-film carrying positive charges can adsorb the palladium salt catalyst carrying negative charges directly without conducting any other complex polymerization reaction or grafting reaction on the surface of the substrate, so that operation is easy, and environment friendliness is achieved; meanwhile, the lysozyme two-dimension nano-film is sensitive to ultraviolet light and electron beams, so that surface patterning is achieved after ultraviolet light or electron beam lithography, and the patterning process is simplified.

Method for performing metal electroless deposition based on lysozyme two-dimension nano-film

The invention discloses an application of a two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film as a photoresist. The two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film is taken as the photoresist, a component of the two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film is the natural biomolecule lysozyme capable of being widely acquired from nature, and environmental pollution caused by the traditional photoresist during manual synthesis is avoided; the two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film is higher in transparency and low in roughness, has controllable thickness and does not require tedious technologies such as coating, baking and the like, all that is required is to perform in-situ growth of the two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film on the surface of a substrate or directly adhere the prepared two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film to the surface of the substrate in a two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film preparation process, large-area preparation is easy to realize, further, the two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film has better ultraviolet and electron beam sensitiveness, can be exposed in ultraviolet and electron beam modes, is only required to be developed with water after exposure, is free of environmental pollution and has better developing effect; meanwhile, the two-dimensional lysozyme nano-film has good etching resistance, and can be subjected to photoresist removing by selecting a guanidine hydrochloride aqueous solution, an acetic acid aqueous solution and an oxalic acid aqueous solution after etching.
