An overview of the recent development of tuned vibration absorbers (TVAs) for vibration and noise suppression is presented. The paper summarizes some popular theory for analysis and optimal tuning of these devices, discusses various design configurations, and presents some contemporary applications of passive TVAs. Furthermore, the paper also presents a brief discussion on the recent progress of adaptive and semi-active TVAs along with their on-line tuning strategies, and active and hybrid fail-safe TVAs.

Passive, Adaptive and Active Tuned Vibration Absorbers—A Survey

A recently developed hybrid mass damper (HMD) system and its application to a 36-storey high-rise building with a bi-axial eccentricity, located in Tokyo, are presented. This new HMD system utilizes a gear-type pendulum and a linear actuator. Here, the gear-type pendulum is employed to make the natural period of the auxiliary mass comparatively long while minimizing the height of the device, and the linear actuator, on the other hand, ensures smooth and noiseless operation of the system. There are several special features in the control method as well; two HMD systems are applied to control the transverse-torsional coupled vibration of the building, and also variable gain feedback (VGF) control technique has been developed to fully utilize the capacity of the HMD system from weaker to stronger external excitations.



Free vibration tests as well as control of wind vibrations of the building induced by the Typhoon 9810 in 1998 were used to verify the performance of the control system. It was found that the maximum and the root-mean-square acceleration responses of the building were reduced to 63 per cent and 47 per cent of the corresponding uncontrolled accelerations. An active mass damper with a new structure was developed to implement active vibration control for tall buildings, in which a moving mass is supported by multistage rubber bearings. Because of this structure, the damper can be installed on the roof of the building. This means that no indoor space is needed for the damper. Furthermore, the structure can reduce the operational friction and distortion in the mass acceleration as well. For control of the damper, a variable gain control law was proposed, by which the damper can perform against not only winds and weak earthquakes but also strong earthquakes, while it keeps its displacement within a stroke limit of the hydraulic actuators. Excitation tests were carried out for an experimental model of the damper in which a 5300 kg mass was supported by 4 multistage rubber bearings and controlled by 2 hydraulic actuators in a horizontal direction. Through the tests and simulation studies, it was confirmed that the structure and the control law were effective for active vibration control of tall buildings.

Recently, ultra high speed elevators are required for high rise building, where active vibration control mechanism is expected to improve the riding quality of them. Active mass dampers (AMD) are proposed as such control devices, and in this paper, we discuss the feedback control systems designed by optimal regulator. The reduced order models of the elevator were designed and verified through numerical simulations. As a result, it was confirmed that the reduced order control systems have enough performance and robustness against changes of mass, and that the design of the control systems could be very simple for an actual elevator system.
