An apparatus for processing a video signal and method thereof are disclosed. The present invention includes receiving prediction mode information, interpolating information and a residual of a current block, reconstructing an interpolating pixel using the interpolating information and a neighbor block, and reconstructing the current block using the interpolating pixel, the prediction mode information and the residual, wherein the interpolating information is generated based on a location of the current block. According to an apparatus and method for processing a video signal, high reconstruction rate can be obtained by improving the related art method having limited intra prediction modes available for a current block located on a boundary area of a picture in encoding in a manner of reconstructing and using an interpolating pixel based on interpolating information.

Method and an apparatus for processing a video signal

Provided is a video coding method and a video decoding method increasing the resolution and quality of images while suppressing an amount of data required for increasing the resolution. A video coding apparatus includes a first orthogonal transformation unit performing discrete cosine transform on an input picture signal, a low-pass filter performing low-pass filtering on the input picture signal, a downsampling unit downsampling the resolution of a low-frequency image signal, a coding unit compressing and coding a reduced image signal, a local decoding unit decoding a coded bit stream, a second orthogonal transformation unit performing discrete cosine transform on a decoded image signal, and a modification information generation unit generating, based on input image DCT coefficients and decoded image DCT coefficients, coefficient modification information used for modifying orthogonal transformation coefficients obtained by performing orthogonal transformation on a decoded video signal obtained from a coded bit stream.

Video encoding method and video decoding method

The H.264 video coding standard significantly outperforms previous standards in terms of coding efficiency. However, this comes as a cost of extremely high computational complexity due to mode decision where variable block size motion estimation (ME) is employed. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to jointly optimize mode decision and ME. A theoretical analysis is performed to study the sufficient condition to detect all-zero blocks in H.264, and thus adaptive thresholds are derived to early terminate mode decision and ME. Besides the aforementioned early termination technique, the proposed algorithm also introduces temporal-spatial checking, thresholds based prediction and monotonic error surface based prediction methods to skip checking unnecessary modes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the computational complexity of H.264 encoding while maintaining almost the same rate distortion (RD) performance as the original encoder

An Efficient Mode Decision Algorithm for H.264/AVC

A moving picture coding method includes (i) transforming, for each of one or more second processing units included in the first processing unit, a moving picture signal in a spatial domain into a frequency domain coefficient and quantizing the frequency domain coefficient, and (ii) performing arithmetic coding on a luminance CBF flag indicating whether or not a quantized coefficient is included in the second processing unit in which transform and quantization are performed, wherein, in the arithmetic coding, a probability table for use in arithmetic coding is determined according to whether or not the size of the first processing unit is identical to the size of the second processing unit and whether or not the second processing unit has a predetermined maximum size.

Moving picture coding method, moving picture decoding method, moving picture coding apparatus, moving picture decoding apparatus, and moving picture coding and decoding apparatus

The H.264 video coding standard provides considerably higher coding efficiency than previous standards do, whereas its complexity is significantly increased at the same time. In an H.264 encoder, the most time-consuming component is variable block-size motion estimation. To reduce the complexity of motion estimation, an early termination algorithm is proposed in this paper. It predicts the best motion vector by examining only one search point. With the proposed method, some of the motion searches can be stopped early, and then a large number of search points can be skipped. The proposed method can work with any fast motion estimation algorithm. Experiments are carried out with a fast motion estimation algorithm that has been adopted by H.264. Results show that significant complexity reduction is achieved while the degradation in video quality is negligible.

An effective variable block-size early termination algorithm for H.264 video coding

In an H.264 video encoder, motion estimation (ME) is the most time-consuming component. The ME process consists of two stages, integer pixel search and fractional pixel search. Since the complexity of integer pixel search has been greatly reduced by numerous fast ME algorithms, the computation overhead required by fractional pixel ME has become relatively significant. To reduce the complexity of fractional pixel ME, we propose a prediction-based directional fractional pixel ME algorithm. We utilize more accurate motion vector predictions and directional search to achieve better computation reduction. We further propose an early termination method to decrease the amount of search. Experimental results show that, compared to the full search sub-pel ME and the fast sub-pel ME proposed in H.264, the proposed method can reduce up to 84% and 74% of fractional pixel search points respectively, with a negligible degradation in quality.
