Due to the global rise of the human population, one of the top-most challenges for poor and developing nations is to use the food produces safely and sustainably. In this regard, the storage of surplus food (and derived products) without loss of freshness, nutrient stability, shelf life, and their parallel efficient utilization will surely boost the food production sector. One of the best technologies that have emerged within the last twenty years with applications in the packaging of food and industrial materials is the use of green mode-based synthesized nanoparticles (NPs). These NPs are stable, advantageous as well as eco-friendly. Over the several years, numerous publications have confirmed that these NPs exert antibacterial, antioxidant, and antifungal activity against a plethora of pathogens. The storage in metal-based NPs (M-NPs) does not hamper the food properties and packaging efficiency. Additionally, these M-NPs help in the improvement of properties including freshness indicators, mechanical properties, antibacterial and water vapor permeability during food packaging. As a result, the nano-technological application facilitates a simple, alternate, interactive as well as reliable technology. It even provides positive feedback to food industries and packaging markets. Taken together, the current review paper is an attempt to highlight the M-NPs for prominent applications of antimicrobial properties, nanosensors, and food packaging of food items. Additionally, some comparative reports associated with M-NPs mechanism of action, risks, toxicity, and overall future perspectives have also been made.

Metal-based nanoparticles, sensors, and their multifaceted application in food packaging.

A generation of nanoparticles research has discussed recently. It is mandatory to elaborate the applications of biogenic nanoparticles in general and anticancereous property in particular. The present study was aimed to investigate the in vitro cytotoxicity effect of biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) against human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells towards the development of anticancer agent. Biogenic AgNPs were achieved by employing Sesbania grandiflora leaf extract as a novel reducing agent. It was well characterized by FESEM, EDAX and spectral studies showed spherical shaped nanoparticles in the size of 22 nm in slightly agglomerated form. It was surprising that biogenic AgNPs showed cytotoxic effect against MCF-7 cell lines were confirmed by MTT, AO-EB, Hochest and COMET assays. There was an immediate induction of cellular damage in terms of loss of cell membrane integrity, oxidative stress and apoptosis were found in the cell which treated with AgNPs. This may be a first report on anti-MCF-7 property of biogenic AgNPs in the fourth generation of nanoparticles research. It is necessary to study the formulation and clinical trials to establish the nano drug to treat cancer cells.

Biogenic silver nanoparticles for cancer treatment: An experimental report

The medicinal benefits of P. lanceolata L. have been acknowledged worldwide for hundreds of years. The plant is now distributed worldwide, especially in temperate zones. This review gives an overview of ethnomedicinal use, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and other potential application of P. lanceolate L. Several effective chemical constituents such as polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, iridoid glycosides, fatty acids, and polysaccharides are found in P. lanceolata L., which contribute to its exerting specific therapeutic effects. Correspondingly, studies have found that P. lanceolata L. has different biological activities, including antioxidant, antibacterial, wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, and antiulcerogenic activity. The plant also treats various diseases related to the skin, respiratory organs, digestive organs, reproduction, circulation, cancer, pain relief, and infections. The plant has many applications in cosmetics such as lotion and creams; it is also used as an excellent indicator to know the presence and absence of heavy metals and the accumulation in industrial and urban areas. The plant suppresses soil nitrogen mineralization in agriculture due to allelochemicals such as aucubin. The biological activities, medicinal properties, and industrial application of P. lanceolata mainly depend on the activities of the responsible, active chemical constituents. However, this field still needs more study to determine the exact mechanisms and the main bioactive compound activity accountable for these activities. Also, most of the studies have been performed in vitro, so further in vivo studies are recommended for the future.

Medicinal plants have been treating various ailments and diseases since ancient times. Aquatic and semiaquatic medicinal plants play an essential role in human welfare to fulfill their daily needs. They have shown biological, pharmacological, nutraceutical, and commercial applications. This review aims to collect and update all recent information on ethnomedicinal, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and nanoparticle synthesis and their uses in aquatic and semiaquatic medicinal plants. Original research papers, review papers, short communications, and book chapters on aquatic and semiaquatic plants have been retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords, ethnomedicinal studies, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and nanoparticle synthesis from aquatic and semiaquatic medicinal plants are used for the search. Different aquatic and semiaquatic medicinal plants belonging to the families Acanthaceae, Alismataceae, Amaranthaceae, Apiaceae, Araceae, Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, Ceratophyllaceae, Cyperaceae, Fabaceae, Hydrocharitaceae, Lythraceae, Marsileaceae, Menyanthaceae, Nelumbonaceae, Nymphaeaceae, Onagraceae, Plantaginaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Pontederiaceae, Primulaceae, Scrophulariaceae, and Zingiberaceae have been studied. They are rich in alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, saponins, tannins, dietary fiber, glycosidic derivatives, carbohydrates, and proteins. These phytochemicals have been used for their antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, sedative, anticonvulsant, cytotoxic, antiparasitic, and antidiabetic activities. Besides this, various parts of the plants are used as dietary supplements and green nanoparticle synthesis. These plants are also known for their commercial value and are used as an ingredient in some pharmaceutical industries.

Current status of Aloe-based nanoparticle fabrication, characterization and their application in some cutting-edge areas

Nanoparticles (NPs) having at least one dimension less than 100 nm have attracted much attention because of a plethora of applications in biomedical sciences and other sectors. Like other biological samples, several macro- and microscopic algae, fungi, and yeast representatives have evolved as a promising substitute to the physical and chemical procedures of NPs synthesis. They are found to be the advantageous, eco-friendly, simple, less expensive, and exciting adoptable pathway over the traditional methods. These biological samples contained many primary and secondary metabolites that act as reducing agents to produce NPs from metal salts without producing any toxic byproduct. Once the biomolecules present is these biological samples are identified, the NPs of desired shape or size may be synthesized. Further, their dimension is controlled by several factors such as temperature, incubation time, pH, concentration of the solution, and so on. These NPs can be used in biomedical sciences as antimicrobial and antibiofilm agents, cancer cell treatment, photoimaging, cell labeling, and so on. In this chapter, we have attempted to update the recent years’ procedure of NPs synthesis from algae, fungi, and yeast, their characterization and application in cutting-edge areas of biomedical sciences.

Algae-, fungi-, and yeast-mediated biological synthesis of nanoparticles and their various biomedical applications

In recent years, the interest of consumers around the world is increasing toward the use of herbal products for personal and beauty care. Essential oils (EOs) play a major role in cosmetic and personal health care industries. EOs are natural fragrance liquid that contains a natural chemical, which imparts the plants its essence. They have been isolated from different forest-based and elsewhere available plant species. Usually, they are obtained from different plant parts such as leaves (Cymbopogon jwarancusa and Cymbopogon citratus), flower (Lavandula angustifolia and Salvia rosmarinus), bark (Canella winterana and Cassia cinnamon), wood (Santalum album), roots (Valeriana officinalis, and Sassafras albidum), seeds (Myristica fragrans and Anethum graveolens), and fruits (Juniperus communis, Citrus limon, Citrus sinensis, and Citrus bergamia). The chemical composition of EOs may differ depending on the geographical location, climatic conditions, plant species, and so on. These oils find their application in cosmetic products, shampoo, soap, perfume, detergents, etc. Currently, approximately 3000 EOs are known; among this 17,500 aromatic flora or plants possess EOs. Some of the main plant families that contain EOs are Lamiaceae, Rutaceae, Myrtaceae, Zingiberaceae, and Asteraceae. This chapter provides an overview of the role of forest-based and elsewhere available plant species in terms of EOs production and their cosmetic and personal health care applications.
