We briefly reflect on the theoretical contributions of the ongoing series of special issues on theories of family enterprise and discuss the contributions of each article and commentary in the current special issue. We observe that the meta-themes—the unique goals, governance, and resources of family firms—are not only primary sources of heterogeneity but key determinants of outcomes such as the continuation of family involvement, firm survival and renewal, and financial performance. We conclude that the importance and interrelationships of goals, governance, and resources suggest that a configuration approach to studying their interactions in family firms might be useful.

The influence of family goals, governance, and resources on firm outcomes : some further advances

The aim of the current paper is advance a comprehensive framework meant to bridge three major concepts, namely intellectual capital (IC), the internationalization process of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the achievement of sustainable competitive advantage. The paper stresses upon a managerial perspective within the internationalization context, investigating the human, structural and relational capital apposite to managers or entrepreneurs. By directly addressing the relationships among the constructs, the endeavor is complementary to previous systematic reviews on similar topics which tangentially discuss the conceptual triad and thus proposes an integrative research agenda for future interdisciplinary studies straddling the fields of management, business, entrepreneurship and sustainability. In terms of methodology, a systematic literature review was envisaged, by applying a stepwise approach and multifold criteria. Over 100 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals were scrutinized and considered in the analysis. The literature review revealed that conceptual papers in the field are scarce despite the variety of their aims and approaches. The quantitative-based empirical studies prevail over the qualitative ones, while mixed methods research designs are scant. In terms of content, the extant studies fall short to advance research and structural models testing and assessing the specific relations among constructs and avail new research avenues focused on the underlying processes of SMEs internationalization by means of intellectual capital harnessing and sustainable competitive advantage achievement.

The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that copreneurs used in managing WFC to achieve business sustainability for longer than 10 years. Three copreneurs from 3 copreneurial businesses located in theFamily businesses including copreneurships have a high failure rate. Copreneurs experience work–family conflict (WFC), which can have a negative effect on business sustainability. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that copreneurs used in managing WFC to achieve business sustainability for longer than 10 years. Three copreneurs from 3 copreneurial businesses located in the Greater Accra region of Ghana, who have employed effective strategies to cope with WFC to achieve business sustainability longer than 10 years, participated in the study. The WFC model for business/marriage partners (copreneurs) and the reciprocal coping model served as the conceptual framework that grounded the study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, company documents, and a reflective journal. The data were analyzed using the framework of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and making conclusions. Emerging themes included strategy themes of personal coping, family-friendly organizational supports, and integrated coping. The implications for positive social change include the potential to help copreneurs use strategies identified to manage WFC to improve business sustainability, which may contribute to wealth creation and poverty reduction in the local economy. Copreneurs' Coping Strategies for Work-Family Conflict

This study aims to investigate the relationship between organizational systems, market orientation, family culture and the long-term business performance of family businesses in the wine sector in three countries.,A survey by questionnaire was undertaken with 123 wineries in Australia, Germany and Italy. Multiple-item measurement scales and multiple regression models were used to investigate mediation effects.,The findings indicate a marked influence of organizational systems and family culture on financial performance. Market orientation fully mediates the effect of family culture and partially mediates the effect of organizational systems on financial performance.,From a managerial perspective, this research indicates the central role of family culture when evaluating a firm’s capabilities and potential in the long term. The findings and their implications are of immediate concern for family firms in the wine sector.,For the first time, the antecedents of market orientation are investigated through simultaneous application of two key frameworks from marketing research and family business research in a single joint analysis.

Family culture and organisational systems as antecedents of market orientation and performance among family wineries

Colombia is a megadiverse country, ranks fourth in plant species richness, fifth place in mammals, first place in birds, third place in reptiles, second place in amphibians, freshwater fish, and butterflies. Despite this richness, more than 1,000 species are at risk. Colombia is characterized by rich mineral and oil resources; however, resource exploitation has been developed in an inadequate way, which has led to extensive generation of environmental liabilities (EL) for centuries. Although the country has made relevant improvements in environmental management, it does not have a formal structure for the EL assessment and management. This research establishes the Colombian EL status, typology, and distribution. We identified a total of 223, and all Colombian departments are affected to a greater or lesser extent, except Quindio, Caqueta, Guaviare, and Vichada. Considering the sensitivity of this situation for Colombian environmental management, it is formulated recommendations for preventing and remedying the mining and oil/gas EL in Colombia. On the other hand, it is established a baseline for national surveillance of these.

The internationalisation of Spanish family firms through business groups: factors affecting the profitability, and the moderating effect of the family nature of the Spanish business

The Colombian mining has acquired an important role in the economy of the country. Despite its relevancy, environmental and social impacts are not insignificant, on the contrary, the scope of this deterioration has demanded the adoption of public policies to counteract it. The country is lagging behind in Latin America in environmental policy, particularly as regards manage of so called mining environmental liabilities and abandoned, inactive, paralyzed or orphaned mine closure requiring measures to mitigate them or remedy them, in addition to the management of risks of effects both current and future. For a suitable management of these liabilities, it is convenient the design and application of a risk matrix incorporating good mining practices in order to mitigate and prevent further damage to socio-environmental surroundings.
