Use surveys and collection analyses: A prelude to serials rationalization

Affecting the geoscience information user are a number of factors inherent in the field itself: its interdisciplinary nature; the wide variety of sources, ranging from monographs and journals to guidebooks and aerial photographs; and the relative usefulness of older material. This paper addresses specific concerns of the user within the context of some of the stages in geoscience information processing and management--production of primary sources, acquisition and storage, organization and control, identification and location, and physical access. Problem areas include new journal formats, escalating costs and time lags throughout the process, inadequate indexing and abstracting, and proliferation of primary data.

Serials Cancellations: An Analysis of Processes, Criteria, and Decision Making Tools

Camcellations of serials at the University of Illinois Library were made on a massive scale in 1975 and 1976. The procedures are explained, and the librarians' criteria for canceling are summarized. When new funds were allocated, reinstatements were made under some limitations. The reasons for reinstatements are given. An evaluation of the problems follows. As other libraries have found in the last decade, the University of Illinois Library could not continue with the same ordering policy it once had.
