Journal ArticleDOI

Probiotic alternatives to reduce gastrointestinal infections: the poultry experience.

TL;DR: The role of the intestinal microbiota in the reduction of the gastrointestinal infections is emphasized and draws heavily on studies in poultry.
Journal ArticleDOI

Salmonella Host Range of Bacteriophages That Infect Multiple Genera

TL;DR: The experiments suggest that bacteriophage host range is not always genera-restricted and that selection of subpopulations of bacteriaphages capable of amplification in alternative genera may provide a tool for selection of broad host-range bacter iophages for the pathogen of interest.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation and Selection of Bacillus Species Based on Enzyme Production, Antimicrobial Activity, and Biofilm Synthesis as Direct-Fed Microbial Candidates for Poultry.

TL;DR: Results of the present study suggest that the selection and consumption of Bacillus-DFM, producing a variable set of enzymes and antimicrobial compounds, may contribute to enhanced performance through improving nutrient digestibility, reducing intestinal viscosity, maintaining a beneficial gut microbiota, and promoting healthy intestinal integrity in poultry.
Journal ArticleDOI

Vaccines as alternatives to antibiotics for food producing animals. Part 1: challenges and needs

TL;DR: This article synthesizes and expands on the expert panel discussions regarding opportunities, challenges and needs for the development of vaccines that may reduce the need for use of antibiotics in animals; new approaches and potential solutions will be discussed in part 2 of this series.
