This study used a state-of-the-art approach to estimate the long-term wave statistics in the East China Sea. The wave climate in the past 60 years (1950-2009) was simulated by a third generation wave model driven by the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis wind data. Based on the statistical analysis of the numerical results, the mean wave fields and the extreme wave fields with 100-year and 50-year return period on the whole computational domain were obtained. The spatial variations of the wave fields show that the statistical waves decrease from south to north and from sea to coast in general, which can be associated with the local topography of the East China Sea. The seasonal variations show that the mean waves in the winter and autumn are slightly larger than those in the spring and summer, while the extreme waves in the summer are much larger than those in the other seasons, which is mainly due to the seasonal variation of monsoonal winds and the occurrence of typhoon events in the summer. The outputs of this paper are helpful to understand the distribution of mean and extreme waves in the East China Sea, and also useful to calculate the design waves in the coastal area if nearshore wave model like the SWAN model is introduced.

Modelling of Extreme Wave Climate in China Seas

A Meteorological model and a dry deposition module were used to estimate the effects of sea surface rough flow (SSRF) over the sea surface on dry deposition velocities. The dry deposition turbulence resistance, Ra, and sub-layer resistance, Rb, decreased more than 10% and 5% due to SSRF, respectively. For example, for HNO3, the mean dry deposition velocities (Vd) were 0.51 cm s^(-1) in January, 0.58 in April, 0.65 cm s^(-1) in July and 0.79 cm s^(-1) in October with only smooth flow over the sea surface. However, the SSRF increased the Vd of HNO3 by 5 - 20% in the east China seas. These results show that SSRF is an important factor in estimating surface roughness to further improve calculation of the dry deposition velocities over the ocean. Improvements in parameterization of sea roughness length will be a worthwhile effort in related future studies.

Influence of Rough Flow over Sea Surface on Dry Atmospheric Deposition Velocities

In order to obtain more accurate results than the traditional method of wave statistics，the third-generation ocean wave model WAVEWATCH III (WW3) is applied to simulate the sea wave field of the Northwest Pacific. The model is driven by the QSCAT/NCEP blended winds. Then wave parameters are analyzed by statistical analysis method. The comparison of the significant wave heights between the simulation results and observation data indicates that the correlation coefficient is greater than 0.9. Furthermore, a post-processor system which integrates data analysis and graphic display is established. A comprehensive evaluation is presented after analyzing the time and spatial distribution of computational wave heights. During the winter there is a big wave area in the Japan Sea. In the East China Sea, there is a period of relatively big wave in summer. Throughout the year, the average wave height is the maximum in the South China Sea.

Simulation and Analysis of Ocean Wave in the Northwest Pacific Ocean

The meteorological data for shipping in the The western part of the N. Pacific Ocean during 1950~1995 analyzed taking 5°×5° latiude and longitude as staistical girds.The characteristics and changing laws of the wind, wave and swell are given. This area is representative's monsoon area. In the period of monsoon, the directions of wind, wind wave and swell are roughly consistent. In a year, the direction of wind wave is almost Northeast in equatorial zone. The monsoon in winter is stronger than that one in summer,corresponding, the average wave high is higher, and the frequencies of rough sea and heavy swell are also stronger.Both of North Indian Ocean and this sea area is monsoon area, but characteristic is opposite. This text provide specification data of wind field and wave field and the changing law for ships sailing、 working、 scientist and military active in The western part of the N. Pacific Ocean.
