A charge storage device comprising: a first electrode; a second electrode being opposed to and spaced apart from the first electrode; a porous separator disposed between the electrodes; a sealed package for containing the electrodes, the separator and an electrolyte in which the electrodes are immersed; and a first terminal and a second terminal being electrically connected to the first electrode and the second electrode respectively and both extending from the package to allow external electrical connection to the respective electrodes, wherein the gravimetric FOM of the device is greater than about 2.1 Watts/gram. Also described is a method of manufacturing a charge storage device, the method comprising the steps of: providing a first electrode; disposing a second electrode in opposition to and spaced apart from the first electrode; disposing a porous separator between the electrodes; containing within a sealed package the electrodes, the separator and an electrolyte, wherein the electrodes are immersed in the electrolyte; and electrically connecting a first terminal and a second terminal to the first electrode and the second electrode respectively such that the terminals extending from the package to allow external electrical connection to the respective electrodes, wherein the gravimetric FOM of the device is greater than about 2.1 Watts/gram.

Charge storage device

Different types of energy storage systems are described, in particular hydro-pneumatic storage systems. In one, energy is stored by compressing gas in a chamber (44,45,54,55) with a liquid piston and released by gas expansion. A spray head or grid at the top of the chamber (44,45,54,55) supplies liquid as a shower through the gas being compressed or expanding in the cylinder (11,12) to maintain an isothermal condition. In another, energy is stored from an array of solar cells connected to an array of supercapacitors forming an auxiliary storage, and a main energy storage device such as a hydro-pneumatic storage system, for supply to an AC or DC network. The efficiency is improved by connecting the solar cells via the array of supercapacitors to the AC or DC network. An immersed hydro-pneumatic storage device for off-shore/on-shore power generation systems comprises a cylinder that is immersed in a liquid mass, wherein energy is stored by compressing gas with a liquid piston and energy is released by gas expansion. The mass of liquid maintains an isothermal condition in the cylinder during compression and expansion.

The invention relates to methods and systems for the storage and recovery of energy using open-air hydraulic-pneumatic accumulator and intensifier arrangements that combine at least one accumulator and at least one intensifier in communication with a high-pressure gas storage reservoir on a gas-side of the circuits and a combination fluid motor/pump, coupled to a combination electric generator/motor on the fluid side of the circuits.

Systems and methods for energy storage and recovery using compressed gas

The invention relates to systems and methods for rapidly and isothermally expanding and compressing gas in energy storage and recovery systems that use open-air hydraulic-pneumatic cylinder assemblies, such as an accumulator and an intensifier in communication with a high-pressure gas storage reservoir on a gas-side of the circuits and a combination fluid motor/pump, coupled to a combination electric generator/motor on the fluid side of the circuits. The systems use heat transfer subsystems in communication with at least one of the cylinder assemblies or reservoir to thermally condition the gas being expanded or compressed.

Systems and methods for combined thermal and compressed gas energy conversion systems

The energy content of supercapacitor is determined by its capacitance value and working voltage. To attain a high capacitance and a high voltage, several pieces of electrodes and separators are spirally wound with edge sealing to form a bipolar supercapacitor in cylindrical, oval or square configuration. While the winding operation effectively provides a large surface area for high capacitance, the bipolar packaging instantly imparts a unitary roll a minimum working voltage of 5V on using an organic electrolyte. The bipolar roll is a powerful building block for facilitating the assembly of supercapacitor modules. Using containers with multiple compartments, as many bipolar rolls can be connected in series, in parallel or in a combination of the two connections to fabricate integrated supercapacitors with high energy density as required by applications.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bipolar super capacitor which has a high operating voltage of 5V and a large current. SOLUTION: This bipolar super capacitor comprises an anode, a cathode, at least one bipolar electrode inserted between the anode and the cathode, a plurality of isolating films arranged after the anode, cathode and the bipolar electrode, respectively, and electrolytic solution in which the isolating film is soaked. The anode, the cathode, the bipolar electrode and the isolating film are wound concentrically. Further, the capacitor comprises a plurality of wound bodies that has a lead fitted to the anode and another lead fitted to the cathode, and a case that has partitions housing a plurality of the wound bodies, respectively, and are connected in series, in parallel or in combination of them. The wound body is sealed with a polymer with the beginnings of all electrodes and isolating films, ends of all electrodes and isolating films, an upper edge of the winding bodies and a lower edge of the wound bodies as sealing materials.
