A system and method for combining power from DC power sources. Each power source is coupled to a converter. Each converter converts input power to output power by monitoring and maintaining the input power at a maximum power point. Substantially all input power is converted to the output power, and the controlling is performed by allowing output voltage of the converter to vary. The converters are coupled in series. An inverter is connected in parallel with the series connection of the converters and inverts a DC input to the inverter from the converters into an AC output. The inverter maintains the voltage at the inverter input at a desirable voltage by varying the amount of the series current drawn from the converters. The series current and the output power of the converters, determine the output voltage at each converter.

An amount of available operating reserve is determined based on the projected energy savings.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To operate a plurality of inverters at nearly the same frequency, without concentrating on a specific inverter by randomly selectively operating the number of inverters decided based on the DC output of a power system or the AC outputs of the inverters. SOLUTION: A power unit is constituted of a DC power source 1 constituted of a plurality of solar battery modules, four rated-output inverters 11-14 which are connected in parallel with the power source 1, and a control section 2 which controls the inverters 11-14. In addition, change-over switches S1-S4 are provided, corresponding to the ivnerters 11-14. A selecting section 6 selects the number of inverters decided by means of an arithmetic section 5, which decides the number of inverters to be operated by means of the control section 2 based on a signal from a measuring means 4. The inverters to be operated are randomly selected from the inverters 11-14, based on the output of a random number generating section 7 incorporated in the selecting section 6. The control section 2 operates the inverters by turning on the change-over switches, corresponding to the inverters selected by means of the selecting section 6 by sending control signals to the switches.
