Journal ArticleDOI
An interdisciplinary expert consensus statement on assessment of pain in older persons
Thomas Hadjistavropoulos,Keela Herr,Dennis C. Turk,Perry G. Fine,Robert H. Dworkin,Robert D. Helme,Kenneth C. Jackson,Patricia A. Parmelee,Thomas E. Rudy,B. Lynn Beattie,John T. Chibnall,Kenneth D. Craig,Betty Ferrell,Bruce A. Ferrell,Roger B. Fillingim,Lucia Gagliese,Romayne Gallagher,Stephen J. Gibson,Elizabeth Harrison,Benny Katz,Francis J. Keefe,S.J. Lieber,David Lussier,Kenneth E. Schmader,Raymond C. Tait,Debra K. Weiner,Jaime Williams +26 more
TL;DR: Recommendations are provided regarding the physical examination and the assessment of pain using self-report and observational methods (suitable for seniors with dementia) and the physical and emotional functioning of older adults experiencing pain.
Journal ArticleDOI
The measurement of postoperative pain: A comparison of intensity scales in younger and older surgical patients
Lucia Gagliese,Nataly Weizblit,Nataly Weizblit,Wendy Ellis,Vincent W. S. Chan,Vincent W. S. Chan +5 more
TL;DR: Psychometric analyses suggested that the NRS was the preferred pain intensity scale, which had low error rates, and higher face, convergent, divergent and criterion validity than the other scales, which were not age‐related.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathways to distress: the multiple determinants of depression, hopelessness, and the desire for hastened death in metastatic cancer patients.
Gary Rodin,Gary Rodin,Gary Rodin,Christopher Lo,Christopher Lo,Christopher Lo,Mario Mikulincer,Allan Donner,Lucia Gagliese,Camilla Zimmermann,Camilla Zimmermann,Camilla Zimmermann +11 more
TL;DR: Depression and hopelessness were found to be mutually reinforcing, but distinct constructs that independently predicted the desire for hastened death, and mediated the effects of psychosocial and disease-related variables on this outcome.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neuropathic pain symptoms in a community knee OA cohort
Jacqueline Hochman,Lucia Gagliese,Lucia Gagliese,Aileen M. Davis,Aileen M. Davis,Gillian A. Hawker,Gillian A. Hawker +6 more
TL;DR: Among older adults with chronic symptomatic knee OA, over one-quarter had NP symptoms localized to their knees using the mPD-Q, which may facilitate the identification of a neuropathic component to pain in adults with knees OA who may benefit from further evaluation and/or treatment for NP.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neuropathic pain symptoms on the modified painDETECT correlate with signs of central sensitization in knee osteoarthritis
Jacqueline Hochman,Aileen M. Davis,Aileen M. Davis,J.G. Elkayam,Lucia Gagliese,Lucia Gagliese,Lucia Gagliese,Gillian A. Hawker,Gillian A. Hawker +8 more
TL;DR: Among painful OA knees, higher mPD-Q scores were associated with greater odds of having signs of CS, suggesting the modified painDETECT questionnaire may aid the identification of CS in people with chronic knee OA.
