Conflictos políticos y justicia durante la crisis del orden federal en Entre Ríos, 1872-1874

Studies of Brazil's agricultural labor movement have generally neglected its relationship to the struggle for land, but this is neither fair nor accurate. Analyzing the rural labor movement's historical contributions to the land struggle in Brazil, this contribution has been organized into three main periods, emphasizing social relations, institutional activism and policy changes. It argues that despite the peculiarities of different historical contexts, rural labor consistently provoked protest against policies that privileged large landholders, whose concentration of power over land and labor resources continually worsened Brazil's ranking as one of the most unequal of nations. For more than half a century, the most constant opponent of this situation among the peasantry has been the National Confederation of Workers in Agriculture (CONTAG), a corporatist organization of rural labor unions founded in 1963.

The Debate over Military (or Civilian‐Military?) Dictatorship in Brazil in Historiographical Context

The article seeks to analyze the strikes of urban workers in Brazil during the government of Joao Goulart (1961–1964). Previous studies have either solely used the number of walkouts as a basis for analysis or have assessed the size of the strikes on the basis of a limited number of observations. We employ an alternative methodology, founded on nominal variables related to location, sectoral coverage, and labor categories as a proxy for identifying the size of the stoppages and their impact on the economy. It is argued that the Brazilian labor movement was becoming stronger and more autonomous in its relations with the government, and that this changed the balance of power between workers and business groups, contributing to the latter’s support of the overthrow of democracy in Brazil in 1964.

Em anos recentes, a expressao meio ambiente e a preocupacao com o mesmo tornaram-se comuns, mas a problematica ambiental que hoje se firma como problema social e sociologico foi se construindo ao longo da historia da humanidade, ganhando novas e distintas cores, desencadeando diferentes tipos de conflitos. Sob um aparente “consenso” em torno da importância do meio ambiente existem disputas de poder para definir, entre outras coisas, o significado do meio ambiente, as origens e solucoes dos problemas ambientais e as formas de relacionamento entre sociedade e natureza, que influenciam todo o funcionamento da sociedade. Para avancar na discussao sobre este tema, um primeiro passo pode ser compreender que meio ambiente ou natureza nao sao tao “naturais” assim. Para isso, propoe-se discutir como se constroem as concepcoes predominantes sobre o meio ambiente, mediadas pela ciencia e pela cultura capitalista. No âmbito mais concreto destacam-se os conflitos ambientais nas politicas publicas que tem reforcado a importância de mudancas nas relacoes de poder para se desenvolver uma politica ambiental seria e consistente. Para elaborar esta discussao buscou-se apoio em reflexoes de Pierre Bourdieu, Andrew Vincent, Karl Polanyi e Boaventura de Sousa Santos, entre outros.

O acervo foi classificado em 7 categorias: Governos Militares/Militarismo; Relacoes Internacionais; Holandeses; Judeus; Brasil Imperio; Historia/Historiografia/Patrimonio e Arte; e Assuntos Gerais.

The article proposes to analyze the mutual interferences of intellectual
and political fields during the Estado Novo regime in Brazil. On one hand,
Oliveira Vianna argued for the adoption of an authoritarian government as
a means to guarantee order and national unity. In the name of a supposed
“political realism”, he strongly criticized liberal elites whom he accused
of “utopian idealism”. On the other hand, ideas of this sort were used by
the State to legitimate the regime’s political practices, as we intend to
demonstrate for the case of Rio Grande do Sul, using actions taken by interventors
and state administrators (Administrative Department of Public
Service- DASP) as examples.

Estado Novo, realismo e autoritarismo político

Even to this day there is a lack of studies concerning the Brazilian Constitution of 1937, perhaps due to a common disdain of jurists and historians for this document. On one hand, it is understood that it would have represented a summary of the main legal and political ideas advocated by intellectuals like Oliveira Viana and Francisco Campos; on the other hand, it would have also represented a moment of institutionalization and legitimation of a strong regime. We intend to analyze here the possible sense of legal and political legitimacy of the 1937 Constitution and its democratic and corporate character in accordance with its own terms and with the definition of the intellectuals mentioned above.
