Demystifying the Intelligent Machine

Abstract: Taking inspiration from critical studies in the history, culture, and politics of technology, this chapter considers some contemporary developments in the project of creating humanlike machines. My main focus is on humanoid robots, examining how their capacities are figured in relevant technocultural imaginaries and material practices, and the domains in which they are projected into the lives—and deaths—of humans. I look for resources that can help us to think critically about the unquestioned assumptions that these stories repeat, at the same time that they purport to be telling us about things that are unprecedented and, most disturbingly, inevitable. A central goal of this exercise is to identify the contingencies that make the futures reported highly uncertain ones and to contribute to ways of imagining and making our futures differently.

Abstract: Mit ihrem Buch "Plans and Situated Actions: The Problem of Human-Machine Communication" erschloss Lucy SUCHMAN (1987) nicht nur ein neues Wissenschaftsfeld, sie zeigte auch, wie sich der Fokus ethnomethodologischer Forschung gewinnbringend vergrosern lasst. Seitdem ist sie bekannt fur ihre einflussreichen Beitrage im Feld der Science and Technology Studies. In diesem Interview erlautert SUCHMAN, wie sie sich ethnomethodologisch sensibilisiert neuen Forschungsthemen widmete, insbesondere der Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion und der feministischen Wissenschaft. Sie teilt personliche Anekdoten uber ihre Treffen mit Harold GARFINKEL und reflektiert zentrale ethnomethodologische Themen wie die Analyse von Alltagspraktiken und die fundamentale Sozialitat wechselseitiger Verstandlichkeit. Indem sie die Relevanz materialer Studien hervorhebt und diskutiert, wie die Ethnomethodologie zu einer politisch engagierten Wissenschaft beitragen kann, demonstriert SUCHMAN eindrucksvoll die Aktualitat des ethnomethodologischen Programms.

Feministische Science & Technology Studies (STS) und die Wissenschaften vom Künstlichen

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag diskutiert gegenwartige Forschung an der Schnittstelle von feministischer Technikforschung und Science & Technology Studies (STS) mit einem Fokus auf aktuelle Entwicklungen im Bereich der „Wissenschaften vom Kunstlichen“, wie z. B. der Robotik oder der Kunstlichen Intelligenz. In diesen Feldern gewinnen Konzeptionen von Mensch- Maschine-Verbindungen und ihre soziomateriellen Grundlagen neue Brisanz; Grenzen zwischen Natur und Kunstlichkeit werden neu verhandelt. Der Text diskutiert feministische Auseinandersetzungen mit Mensch-Maschine- Beziehungen, ihren materiellen und metaphorischen Grundlagen, aber auch in den Technowissenschaften dominante Vorannahmen und Politiken der Differenz. Er stellt die Frage, wie verantwortungsbewusste Wissensproduktion moglich ist sowie ein kritischer Austausch zwischen feministischen STS und gegenwartigen Projekten der Technowissenschaften. In these fields, the shifting border between nature and artifice is being renegotiated. The central thesis is that, with the rise of information sciences and technologies, concepts of human/machine mixings and their socio-material foundations have gained new relevance. Accordingly, the text discusses feminist analyses of human/machine relations, their material and metaphorical foundations, assumptions that predominate in the technosciences and the politics of difference. Ultimately, it raises questions around both responsible knowledge production and the conditions and possibilities of a critical exchange between feminist STS and current technoscientific projects.
