Structure–soil–structure interaction: Literature review

Two-dimensional SH-type vibration of several shear walls erected on an elastic, homogeneous, half-space has been studied. The choice of the cylindrical coordinate system, suitable for analysis of rigid foundations with semi-circular cross section, has lead to the exact infinite series solution, which is ideal for the analysis of the physical nature of this problem and its dependence on several key parameters.

It has been shown that the presence of neighboring buildings may change the nature of the single soil-structure interaction problem appreciably and that scattering, diffraction, and interference of waves from and around several foundations with the incident SH waves can lead to significant shielding, as well as amplification of input motion for any of the buildings in a group. The effects of relative size of two, three and several foundations and their separation distances have been studied and presented in some detail.

Two-dimensional, antiplane, building-soil-building interaction for two or more buildings and for incident planet SH waves

An efficient discrete model for predicting the dynamic through-the-soil interaction between adjacent rigid, surface foundations supported by a homogeneous, isotropic and linear elastic half-space is presented. The model utilizes frequency-independent springs and dashpots, and the foundation mass, for the consideration of soil–foundation interaction. The through-the-soil coupling of the foundations is attained by frequency-independent stiffness and damping functions, developed in this work, that interconnect the degrees of freedom of the entire system of foundations. The dynamic analysis of the resulting coupled system is performed in the time domain and includes the time lagging effects of coupled dynamic input due to wave propagation using an appropriate modification of the Wilson-θ method. The basic foundation interaction model is also extended to the evaluation of coupled building-foundation systems. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Coupled Soil-Structure Interaction Effects of Building Clusters during Earthquakes

A study is made of the dynamic interaction, through the soil, between two parallel infinite shear walls placed on rigid foundations. The steady-state response of both structures for a vertically incident SH wave is obtained and compared with the corresponding values resulting from consideration of only one structure. 

It is found that the additional interaction effects caused by the presence of a second structure are especially important at low frequencies and in the neighborhood of the fixed-base natural frequencies of the second structure. For high frequencies it is sufficient to consider the interaction between each structure and the soil, ignoring the presence of other structures.
