Assessment of potential risks associated with chemicals in wastewater used for irrigation in arid and semiarid zones: A review

Wastewater irrigation for vegetable production is a highly prevalent practice in Addis Ababa and a number of articles have been published on wastewater-irrigated soils and vegetables contaminated with heavy metals. However, to the best of our knowledge, an insight into assessment of human health risks associated with the consumption of vegetable crops grown on wastewater-irrigated soils is non-existent in the city. Long-term effect of wastewater irrigation on the build-up of heavy metals in soils and selected vegetable crops in Addis Ababa urban vegetable farming sites (10) was evaluated. By calculating estimated daily intakes (EDIs) and target hazard quotients (THQs) of metals, health risk associated with the consumption of the analyzed vegetables was also evaluated. The heavy metal concentrations in irrigation water and soils did not exceed the recommended maximum limits (RMLs). Moreover, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn concentrations in all analyzed vegetables were lower than the RML standards. In contrast, Pb concentrations were 1.4–3.9 times higher. Results of two way ANOVA test showed that variation in metals concentrations were significant (p < 0.001) across farming site, vegetable type and site x vegetable interaction. The EDI and THQ values showed that there would be no potential health risk to local inhabitants due to intake of individual metal if one or more of the analyzed vegetables are consumed. Furthermore, total target hazard quotients (TTHQs) for the combined metals due to all analyzed vegetables were lower than 1, suggesting no potential health risk even to highly exposed local inhabitants. There is a great respite that toxic metals like Pb and Cd have not posed potential health risk even after long term (more than 50 years) use of this water for irrigation. However, intermittent monitoring of the metals from irrigation water, in soil and crops may be required to follow/prevent their build-up in the food chain.

Heavy metal accumulation and health risk assessment in wastewater-irrigated urban vegetable farming sites of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Heavy metals are regarded as toxic trace elements in the environment. Heavy metal pollution in soil or rice grains is of increasing concern. In this study, 101 pairs of soil and rice samples were collected from the major rice-producing areas along the Yangtze River in China. The soil properties and heavy metal (i.e., Cd, Hg, Pb and Cr) concentrations in the soil and rice grains were analyzed to evaluate the heavy metal accumulation characteristics of the soil-rice systems. The results showed that the Cd, Hg, Pb and Cr concentrations in the soil ranged from 0.10 to 4.64, 0.01 to 1.46, 7.64 to 127.56, and 13.52 to 231.02 mg·kg−1, respectively. Approximately 37%, 16%, 60% and 70% of the rice grain samples were polluted by Cd, Hg, Pb, and Cr, respectively. The degree of heavy metal contamination in the soil-rice systems exhibited a regional variation. The interactions among the heavy metal elements may also influence the migration and accumulation of heavy metals in soil or paddy rice. The accumulation of heavy metals in soil and rice grains is related to a certain extent to the pH and soil organic matter (SOM). This study provides useful information regarding heavy metal accumulation in soil to support the safe production of rice in China. The findings from this study also provide a robust scientific basis for risk assessments regarding ecological protection and food safety.

Heavy Metal Pollution in a Soil-Rice System in the Yangtze River Region of China.

Use of industrial and wastewater for irrigation is on the rise in India and other developing countries because of scarcity of good-quality irrigation water Wastewaters contain plant nutrients that favour crop growth but leave a burden of heavy metals which can enter the food chain and is a cause of great concern The present study was undertaken on the long-term impact of irrigation with treated sewage water for growing vegetables and the potential health risk associated with consumption of such vegetable Treated sewage water (TSW), groundwater (GW), soil and plant samples were collected from peri urban vegetable growing areas of Northern India (Varanasi) and analysed to assess the long-term effect of irrigation with TSW on Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb build-up in soils and its subsequent transfer into commonly grown vegetable crops Results indicate that TSW was richer in essential plant nutrients but contained Cd, Cr and Ni in amounts well above the permissible limits for its use as irrigation water Long-term application of TSW resulted in significant build-up of total and DTPA extractable Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb over GW irrigated sites TSW also resulted in slight lowering in pH, increase in organic carbon (16 g kg − 1) and cation exchange capacity (52 cmol kg − 1) The tissue metal concentration and relative efficiency of transfer of heavy metals from soil to plant (transfer factor) for various groups of vegetables were worked out Radish, turnip and spinach were grouped as hyper accumulator of heavy metals whereas brinjal and cauliflower accumulated less heavy metals Health risk assessment by consumption of vegetables grown with TSW indicated that all the vegetables were safe for human consumption However, significant accumulation of these heavy metals in soil and plant needs to be monitored

Effect of long-term application of treated sewage water on heavy metal accumulation in vegetables grown in northern India.

Introduction: COVID-19 is caused by a novel virus and is known to be an infectious respiratory disease affecting more than 200 countries and union territories of the world. 80% of the patients are shown to have mild to moderate disease. Illness prevention is the mainstay of getting away from the condition with the non-availability of vaccines or medicine. Methods: The aim & objective of this study is to describe the behavioral insight (knowledge, attitude & practice) regarding preventive measures of COVID-19 among the teaching hospital staff. An institutional-based descriptive study was conducted among 168 staff, including lab technicians, doctors, staff nurses, and other supporting staff of a tertiary hospital using a convenient sampling technique. The data were obtained by interviewing staff with a pre-tested semi-structured schedule. Result: The study results showed that most of the respondents were found to have good knowledge, attitude, and practice towards preventive measures such as social distancing, hand hygiene, face mask, and PPE Kit. 88% of participants were using 3 layered medical masks, and most of them (63%) were using a regular wash of face mask. Among most respondents, no gap between knowledge and practice was seen; however, proper use, handling, and disposal of face masks and other PPE was a concern. Conclusion: Therefore, there is a need to improve the knowledge of COVID-19 among healthcare workers, which is possible with the availability of good quality Information Education and Communication (IEC) materials. Keywords: Behavioral insight, COVID-19, Social Distancing, Face mask, Hand Hygiene, PPE

Behavioral insight for covid-19 among staffs of a teaching hospital in kumaun region, uttarakhand

A field experiment was conducted during winter season of 2016-17 and 2017-18 to evaluate the effect of residue mulch and irrigation on the physiological response and yield of maize and soil physical properties at G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. The experiment was laid-out in split-plot design which includes three irrigation scheduling in main plots and four residue mulch practices in sub plots. Soil temperature at 15 cm enhanced by 0.6-9.8 0C under mulch and by 0.7-1.2 0C with irrigation at 20% DASM over other irrigation levels. Mulch significantly decreased bulk density by 1.43-3.59% while increased saturated hydraulic conductivity by 3.8-41.0% and mean weight diameter by 6.0-20.0%. Irrigation at less depletion of available soil moisture favoured soil physical properties. Mulch and increase in irrigation frequency tended to increase in relative water content and transpiration rate while decreased leaf diffusive resistance. No noticeable differences in leaf temperature were observed under mulch and irrigation. Green gram straw mulch and irrigation given at 20% DASM produced 2.6-14.2 % and 1.3-9.2% higher grain yield, respectively. Combined application of green gram straw mulch @ 5 t ha-1 along with irrigation at 20% DASM was found most beneficial for maintaining favourable soil environment and can be recommended for obtaining higher maize yield in Mollisols

Effect of straw mulching and irrigation on physiological activities, yield of maize (Zea mays L.) and soil physical properties under available soil moisture depletion conditions in Mollisols

Background: India saw one of the stringent lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the wake of this period, the normal functioning of medical services was affected. People were reluctant to seek medical attention and notification of Tuberculosis dipped. The aim of the study was to estimate the proportion of non-adherence to anti-tubercular treatment and to identify the factors affecting the non-adherence to treatment. Methods: A retrospective community-based study was conducted among 284 tuberculosis patients. They were interviewed using a pre-designed questionnaire consisting of WHO dimensions of non-adherence and lockdown related questions. Results: The proportion of non-adherence to treatment was found to be 5.3%. Factors like chronic diseases, depression, without knowledge on how the disease is transmitted and that medication can be discontinued once the symptoms subsided, alcohol consumption, and trouble accessing medicine were found to be the determining factors in non-adherence to the treatment. Conclusions: Non-adherence to anti-tuberculosis treatment in our study was low but the various dimensions of adherence along with lockdown related factors had significant impact on it. To further minimize non-adherence during emergency like the lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, corrective measures must be explored and implemented.
