This paper is concerned with post-buckling behaviour and the ultimate load capacity of perforated plates with different boundary conditions and subjected to uniaxial or biaxial compression. Plates were analysed using the finite element method (FEM), and extensive studies were carried out covering parameters such as plate slenderness, opening size, boundary conditions and the nature of loading. A design formula to determine the ultimate load carrying capacity was established based on a best-fit regression analysis using the results from the finite element analyses. The accuracy of the proposed formula was established by comparison with experimental values of ultimate capacity and similar finite element values. Ultimate load values are also presented in the form of charts for various values of plate slenderness and opening size.

Design formula for axially compressed perforated plates

A method is presented to estimate the ultimate moment based on a simplified approach to represent the behavior of stiffened plate columns. The assessment of the strength of a very large crude carrier is performed and compared with the moment at failure in hogging estimated by other methods applied to the same case. The proposed method allows the prediction of the degradation of the strength due to corrosion and residual stresses. It also allows the evaluation of the strength of the hull at several heeling conditions. Finally, an analysis of the efficiency of the high tensile steel is carried out.

Design equation for the compressive strength of unstiffened plate elements with initial imperfections

An approximate method of predicting the ultimate load carrying capacity and the post-buckling behaviour of perforated plates typically used in engineering structures is presented. The theory is based on a mechanism solution, used in conjunction with an elastic loading path derived from energy methods. Experiments have shown that a good approximation of the loading and unloading paths for simply supported plates containing square and circular openings has been obtained by the suggested theoretical treatment. Curves suitable for the use of designers have been proposed and can be employed to determine the ultimate capacity of approximately square plates containing centrally placed holes.

Theoretical study on the post-local buckling of steel plates in concrete-filled box columns

A finite element formulation is presented for the large deflexion elasto-plastic analysis of thin mild steel plates subject to buckling loads. The method can be used to trace the behaviour of imperfect steel panels over the full load range, including the unloading stage following collapse. A series of simply supported plates under uniaxial compression has been analysed to study different in-plane boundary conditions, levels of geometric imperfection and residual stress. An approximate method is proposed for handling residual stresses and load-shortening curves are derived. These load-shortening relationships are used in a 'column' analysis to predict the behaviour of wide eccentrically stiffened plating subject to uniaxial compression. The computed collapse loads for both the individual plates and the stiffened plating are compared with experimental results. (A) /TRRL/
