A higher-level phylogenetic classification of the Fungi

Notes on 113 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper, including 11 new genera, 89 new species, one new subspecies, three new combinations and seven reference specimens. A wide geographic and taxonomic range of fungal taxa are detailed. In the Ascomycota the new genera Angustospora (Testudinaceae), Camporesia (Xylariaceae), Clematidis, Crassiparies (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Farasanispora, Longiostiolum (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Multilocularia (Parabambusicolaceae), Neophaeocryptopus (Dothideaceae), Parameliola (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), and Towyspora (Lentitheciaceae) are introduced. Newly introduced species are Angustospora nilensis, Aniptodera aquibella, Annulohypoxylon albidiscum, Astrocystis thailandica, Camporesia sambuci, Clematidis italica, Colletotrichum menispermi, C. quinquefoliae, Comoclathris pimpinellae, Crassiparies quadrisporus, Cytospora salicicola, Diatrype thailandica, Dothiorella rhamni, Durotheca macrostroma, Farasanispora avicenniae, Halorosellinia rhizophorae, Humicola koreana, Hypoxylon lilloi, Kirschsteiniothelia tectonae, Lindgomyces okinawaensis, Longiostiolum tectonae, Lophiostoma pseudoarmatisporum, Moelleriella phukhiaoensis, M. pongdueatensis, Mucoharknessia anthoxanthi, Multilocularia bambusae, Multiseptospora thysanolaenae, Neophaeocryptopus cytisi, Ocellularia arachchigei, O. ratnapurensis, Ochronectria thailandica, Ophiocordyceps karstii, Parameliola acaciae, P. dimocarpi, Parastagonospora cumpignensis, Pseudodidymosphaeria phlei, Polyplosphaeria thailandica, Pseudolachnella brevifusiformis, Psiloglonium macrosporum, Rhabdodiscus albodenticulatus, Rosellinia chiangmaiensis, Saccothecium rubi, Seimatosporium pseudocornii, S. pseudorosae, Sigarispora ononidis and Towyspora aestuari. New combinations are provided for Eutiarosporella dactylidis (sexual morph described and illustrated) and Pseudocamarosporium pini. Descriptions, illustrations and / or reference specimens are designated for Aposphaeria corallinolutea, Cryptovalsa ampelina, Dothiorella vidmadera, Ophiocordyceps formosana, Petrakia echinata, Phragmoporthe conformis and Pseudocamarosporium pini. The new species of Basidiomycota are Agaricus coccyginus, A. luteofibrillosus, Amanita atrobrunnea, A. digitosa, A. gleocystidiosa, A. pyriformis, A. strobilipes, Bondarzewia tibetica, Cortinarius albosericeus, C. badioflavidus, C. dentigratus, C. duboisensis, C. fragrantissimus, C. roseobasilis, C. vinaceobrunneus, C. vinaceogrisescens, C. wahkiacus, Cyanoboletus hymenoglutinosus, Fomitiporia atlantica, F. subtilissima, Ganoderma wuzhishanensis, Inonotus shoreicola, Lactifluus armeniacus, L. ramipilosus, Leccinum indoaurantiacum, Musumecia alpina, M. sardoa, Russula amethystina subp. tengii and R. wangii are introduced. Descriptions, illustrations, notes and / or reference specimens are designated for Clarkeinda trachodes, Dentocorticium ussuricum, Galzinia longibasidia, Lentinus stuppeus and Leptocorticium tenellum. The other new genera, species new combinations are Anaeromyces robustus, Neocallimastix californiae and Piromyces finnis from Neocallimastigomycota, Phytophthora estuarina, P. rhizophorae, Salispina, S. intermedia, S. lobata and S. spinosa from Oomycota, and Absidia stercoraria, Gongronella orasabula, Mortierella calciphila, Mucor caatinguensis, M. koreanus, M. merdicola and Rhizopus koreanus in Zygomycota.

Fungal diversity notes 111–252—taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions to fungal taxa

An overview of the phylogeny of the Agaricales is presented based on a multilocus analysis of a six-gene region supermatrix. Bayesian analyses of 5611 nucleotide characters of rpb1, rpb1-intron 2, rpb2 and 18S, 25S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA genes re- covered six major clades, which are recognized informally and labeled the Agaricoid, Tricholoma- toid, Marasmioid, Pluteoid, Hygrophoroid and Plica- turopsidoid clades. Each clade is discussed in terms of key morphological and ecological traits. At least 11 origins of the ectomycorrhizal habit appear to have evolved in the Agaricales, with possibly as many as nine origins in the Agaricoid plus Tricholomatoid clade alone. Ectomycorrhizal fungi : key genera in profile

Phylogenetic relationships of resupinate Homobasidiomycetes (Corticiaceae s. lat. and others) were studied using ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences from a broad sample of resupinate and nonresupinate taxa. Two datasets were analysed using parsimony, a 'core' dataset of 142 species, each of which is represented by four rDNA regions (mitochondrial and nuclear large and small subunits), and a 'full' dataset of 656 species, most of which were represented only by nuclear large subunit rDNA sequences. Both datasets were analysed using traditional heuristic methods with bootstrapping, and the full dataset was also analysed with the Parsimony Ratchet, using equal character weights and six-parameter weighted parsimony. Analyses of both datasets supported monophyly of the eight major clades of Homobasidiomycetes recognised by Hibbett and Thorn, as well as independent lineages corresponding to the Gloeophyllum clade, corticioid clade and Jaapia argillacea. Analyses of the full dataset resolved two additional groups, the athelioid clade and trechisporoid clade (the latter may be nested in the polyporoid clade). Thus, there are at least 12 independent clades of Homobasidiomycetes. Higher- level relationships among the major clades are not resolved with confidence. Nevertheless, the euagarics clade, bolete clade, athelioid clade and Jaapia argillacea are consistently resolved as a monophyletic group, whereas the cantharelloid clade, gomphoid-phalloid clade and hymenochaetoid clade are placed at the base of the Homobasidiomycetes, which is consistent with the preponderance of imperforate parenthesomes in those groups. The author gives a recapitulation of the families of the Aphyllophorales. He is inclined to recognize 21: the families he is not (yet) prepared to uphold are discussed. The synonymy of the order and the families above the rank of genus is listed, but it is avowedly incomplete. The treatment of each family does not go further than the mention of the included genera, but through selected references cited for each genus in a special list, an introduction to the separate genera is provided. An introductory chapter contains some general remarks and discusses a number of terms used in connection with the treatment of the families. New taxa are, Brachybasidiales, Hericiaceae, Punctulariaceae, Asterostromatoideae, Pteruloideae, while the name Septobasidiales Couch is validly published and the new combination Serpula mollusca (Fr.) Donk is made.

A conspectus of the families of Aphyllophorales

The family is taken in a broad, artificial sense, but exclusive of the Boletaceae and ‘Meruliaceae’ sensu lato. Of the generic names treated 229 are considered validly published, 37 not validly published, and 6 are excluded. Of each name details are given on various nomenclatorial aspects such as valid publication, typification, homonymy, status (legitimacy). The new combinations Flaviporus brownei (Humb. per Pers.) Donk and Xerotinus afer (Fr.) Donk are proposed. Attention is drawn to brief remarks made in connection with Elmerina cladophora (Berk.) Bres., Polyporus scabrosus Pers., Chaetoporus tenuis P. Karst., Polyporus medulla-panis (Jacq.) per Fr.; to the synonymy listed of Merulius alveolaris DC. and Hexagonia mori Pollini; to the valid publication of the names Fomes (Fr.) Fr., Postia Fr., and Schizopora Velen.; and to the typification of the names Antrodia P. Karst., Lignosus (Lloyd) ex Torrend, Melanopus Pat., Merisma (Fr.) Gill. and its synisonyms, Phellinus Quel., Ungulina Pat.

The generic names proposed for Polyporaceae

1. The conidiophores which caused the publication of the genus Tomentella J.-Olsen apud Bref. bear no relation to the basidiferous states with which they were associated. They belong to Ostracoderma Fr. The names based on these associations are nomina confusa. — 2. Peniophorella P. Karst. is an other instance of a nomen confusum: it was based on Hyphoderma puberum to which species foreign spores were ascribed. These two-celled spores induced the introduction of the genus. Some additional species are referred to Hyphoderma Wallr. emend. (two new combinations). — 3. The name Phanerochaete P. Karst. is re-introduced for an as yet not sharply delimited genus, the possible characters and limits of which are discussed. — 4. It would appear that the correct name for Meruliopsis Bond. apud Parmasto is Caloporus P. Karst. The taxon is considered as yet ill-defined; it had better be included in Merulius Fr. for the time being. Karsten’s type species is identified with Merulius taxicola (Pers.) Duby. — 5. The genus Hericium Pers. per S. F. Gray, as now sometimes conceived, is broken up into three genera, Hericium s. str., Creolophus P. Karst., and Dentipellis Donk, gen. nov. (two new combinations), the latter a resupinate genus. Two of its species are discussed in some detail. — 6. It is concluded that Lowe misinterpreted Trametes squalens P. Karst., which is a pileate rather than a Poria species, conspecific with Polyporus anceps Peck, of a later date.

With this check list an attempt is made to account for the recorded European species of those Basidiomycetes that Patouillard called the “Heterobasidies”, excluding, however, the Uredinales and Ustilaginales. Therefore, it covers the Septobasidiales, Tremellales (comprising the Auriculariineae and Tremellineae), Tulasnellaceae (Corticiaceae with repetitive basidiospores), Dacrymycetales, and Exobasidiales. Of each species admitted the synonyms at the specific level are listed as are also references to selected descriptions and illustrations. Notes on taxonomy, synonymy, and nomenclature are appended to a considerable number of entries. A final chapter not only recapitulates alphabetically the names appearing in the check list proper: it also deals briefly with such generic and specific names as are considered to be either not validly published or nomina dubia, or else have been given to taxa that must be excluded as foreign elements. New species are Glomopsis lonicerae and Tulasnella curvispora Donk. New combinations with the following generic names are proposed: Exidia (1), Exobasidiellum (1), Helicogloea (1), Myxarium (1). Saccoblastia (1), Septobasidium (1), and Tulasnella (1).
