Ninety-three ssc's during the 4-year period from 1968 to 1971 at and near the peak of the solar activity cycle were examined Of the 93 ssc's, 81 could be associated with solar activity such as solar flares and type 2 and type 4 radio bursts Disturbances associated with 48 of the ssc's have been studied in detail by using the corresponding interplanetary (IP) magnetic field and plasma data when they were available It was found that 41 of the 48 disturbances corresponded to IP shock waves, and the remaining 7 events were tangential discontinuities Thirty per cent of the IP shocks had thick structure (ie, the magnetic field jump across the shock occurred over a distance much greater than 50 proton Larmor radii) By considering the orientations of 22 well-determined shock normals in relation to the positions of the parent flares on the solar disk, it is suggested that a typical shock front propagating out from the sun at 1 AU has a radius of curvature of the order of 1 AU

A correlative study of ssc's, interplanetary shocks, and solar activity

IMP 6, 7, and 8 data from 104 shock wave disturbances were employed to document the occurrence frequency and properties of the solar wind shock which produce He ion abundance enhancements. The shocks were identified over the 1971-1978 time period and were characterized by a preshock flow with lower than usual average bulk density, a shocked gas layer 12 hr thick, and a postshocked gas layer 1.5 days thick with a high He abundance. A high-temperature peak was found to occur in the first 12 hrs after a He-enriched shock and was not seen when He-enhancement was absent. The total pressure was also three times higher with He-shocks, and speed jumps were greater than 50 km/sec in 56% of the He events. It is concluded that all shock waves in the solar wind at 1 AU originate in coronal mass ejection events, and the presence of He-enrichment is attributable to the geometry of the area that produced the event.

An analysis of shock wave disturbances observed at 1 AU from 1971 through 1978

Direct and indirect observations of interplanetary shock waves have been extended to the study of (i) the shock structure itself; (ii) the disturbed solar wind in its wake; (iii) additional discontinuities such as reverse shocks and pistons; and (iv) the shock's kinematic behavior. The last item — the trajectory — has benefited by the procedure (suggested by Pinter) of matching type II radio drift-inferred velocities with indirectly-inferred initial velocities found from at least two successive measurements in space. The significance of making type II observations at hectometric and kilometric wavelengths (as made, for example, by Slysh and Malitson, Feinberg and Stone) cannot be over-emphasized due to this technique's ability to make unambiguous solar terrestrial relationships. More direct and physically-meaningful observations, however, are still dependent uponin situ plasma and magnetic field measurements. Additional emphasis is presently being placed on numerical modeling of shock-induced disturbances in the solar wind as generated by both flares and stream-stream interactions. The former mechanism is emphasized in this review with several recommendations for further research: (a) further numerical modeling for shocks, starting when they are ‘born’ within relatively low-Alfven speed coronal regions; (b) expanded synoptic studies by spacecraft at various heliocentric longitudes, radii, and (eventually) latitudes with coordinated diagnostics; and (c) extended patrol of natural probes, such as comets, augmented with theoretical studies of possible shock-induced mechanical and chemical effects.

Interplanetary shock waves: Recent developments

Plasma and magnetic field observations of interplanetary streams near 1 AU are summarized. Two types of streams have been identified corotating streams and flare-associated, and other flow patterns are present due to interactions among streams. The theory of corotating streams, which attributes them to a high temperature region near the sun, satisfactorily explains many of the effects observed at 1 AU. A correspondingly complete theory of flare-associated streams does not exist. Streams are a key link in the chain that connects solar and geomagnetic activity. The factors that most influence geomagnetic activity are probably related to streams and determined by the dynamics of streams. The evolution of streams on scales of 27 days and 11 years probably determines the corresponding variations of geomagnetic activity.

Interplanetary streams and their interaction with the earth

Information concerning the coronal expansion is carried by solar-wind heavy ions. Distinctly different energy-per-charge ion spectra are found in two classes of solar wind having the low kinetic temperatures necessary for E/q resolution of the ion species. Heavy-ion spectra which can be resolved are most frequently observed in the low-speed interstream (IS) plasma found between high speed streams; the streams are thought to originate from coronal holes. Although the sources of the IS plasma are uncertain, the heavy-ion spectra found there contain identifiable peaks of O, Si, and Fe ions. Such spectra indicate that the IS ionization state of O is established in coronal gas at a temperature of approximately 1.6 million K, while that of Fe is frozen in farther out at about 1.5 million K. On occasion anomalous spectra are found outside IS flows in solar wind with abnormally depressed local kinetic temperatures. The anomalous spectra contain Fe(16+) ions, not usually found in IS flows, and the derived coronal freezing-in temperatures are significantly higher. The coronal sources of some of these ionizationally hot flows are identified as solar flares.

Solar wind heavy ions from flare-heated coronal plasma

The shapes expected for solar-flare-produced strong shock fronts in the solar wind have been calculated, large-scale variations in the ambient medium being taken into account. It has been shown that for reasonable ambient solar wind conditions the mean and the standard deviation of the east-west shock normal angle are in agreement with experimental observations including shocks of all strengths. The results further suggest that near a high-speed stream it is difficult to distinguish between corotating shocks and flare-associated shocks on the basis of the shock normal alone. Although the calculated shapes are outside the range of validity of the linear approximation, these results indicate that the variations in the ambient solar wind may account for large deviations of shock normals from the radial direction.
