Wireless communications

This paper presents the concept, principles, and analysis of maximum ratio transmission for wireless communications where multiple antennas are used for both transmission and reception. The principles and analysis are applicable to general cases, including maximum ratio combining. Simulation results agree with the analysis. The analysis shows that the average overall SNR is proportional to the cross-correlation between channel vectors and that error probability decreases inversely with the (L/spl times/K)th power of the average SNR.

Maximum ratio transmission

A simple block coding arrangement is created with symbols transmitted over a plurality of transmit channels, in connection with coding that comprises only of simple arithmetic operations, such as negation and conjugation. The diversity created by the transmitter utilizes space diversity and either time or frequency diversity. Space diversity is effected by redundantly transmitting over a plurality of antennas, time diversity is effected by redundantly transmitting at different times, and frequency diversity is effected by redundantly transmitting at different frequencies. Illustratively, using two transmit antennas and a single receive antenna, one of the disclosed embodiments provides the same diversity gain as the maximal-ratio receiver combining (MRRC) scheme with one transmit antenna and two receive antennas. The principles of this invention are applicable to arrangements with more than two antennas, and an illustrative embodiment is disclosed using the same space block code with two transmit and two receive antennas.

Transmitter diversity technique for wireless communications

We evaluate and optimize the performance of switch and stay diversity systems which have the advantage of offering one of the least complex solutions to mitigating the effect of fading. We study the impact of fading type and severity, unbalanced branches, fading correlation, and imperfect channel estimation on the performance of these systems, and compare this performance with that of more complex diversity schemes such as maximal-ratio combining and selection combining. We also propose, analyze, and optimize the performance of a generalized switched diversity scheme. In summary, the presented results offer a simple, generic, and useful analytical tool for the accurate performance evaluation and optimization of switched diversity systems.

Analysis and optimization of switched diversity systems

The performance and optimization of switched diversity systems are considered. First, the one-dimensional distribution and probability density functions of the envelope of the received signal are obtained for three different switching strategies. This information is used to obtain the average probability of bit error for the case of non-coherent detection of binary FSK signals with Rayleigh fading envelopes and additive white Gaussian noise. The optimization of two of these switching strategies is then considered, and it is shown that by proper selection of switching thresholds, the average probability of bit error during detection can be minimized. It is also shown that these optimized switching strategies yield a significant improvement in performance over non-diversity systems and can approach the performance of more complex receivers such as maximal ratio combining. Computer simulations of switched diversity systems using a practical field model are used to verify the analysis.
