Types and amounts of complementary foods and beverages consumed and growth, size, and body composition: a systematic review

The aim of the present study was to assess oral health literacy (OHL) in pregnant women and its association with social determinants and knowledge regarding eating habits and oral hygiene in infants. This cross-sectional study assessed 175 pregnant women in a hospital in southern Brazil. Socioeconomic and demographic data were obtained using a questionnaire, and OHL was determined by the Brazilian Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (BREALD-30). Eating habits and oral hygiene knowledge were assessed by statements on a 3-point Likert scale. The data were analyzed using Spearman correlations and the Mann–Whitney U test (α = 0.05). The mean (SD) age was 26.2 (6.17) years. Most of the participants had up to 8 years of education (60.0 %) and belonged to socioeconomic class “C” or lower (56.0 %).   = 0.374, p < 0.001), and the age at which infants first consumed sugar in their diets (r

  = 0.370, p < 0.001). A negative correlation was found between BREALD-30 scores and domicile agglomeration (r

  = −0.237, p = 0.020). BREALD-30 scores were higher among pregnant women who had more than 8 years of education (p < 0.001), who belonged to higher socioeconomic classes (p < 0.001), and who were employed (p = 0.025). A significant correlation was found between OHL and knowledge. Lower social determinants were associated with lower OHL. Oral health literacy should be considered in health education practices to facilitate adherence to health recommendations in pregnant women.

The Association of Oral Health Literacy and Oral Health Knowledge with Social Determinants in Pregnant Brazilian Women.

The aim of the present study was to investigate determinant factors associated with the presence of dental caries and lesion activity in preschool children. A population-based, cross-sectional study was carried out with 843 children of aged three to five years enrolled at public and private preschools in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil. A questionnaire addressing socio-demographic data and oral health care was self-administered by parents/caregivers. Three dentists previously calibrated examined the children for the diagnosis of dental caries and lesion activity using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). Nutritional status was evaluated based on the body mass index. Logistic regression analysis for complex samples was performed (α = 5%). The prevalence of dental caries was 66.3%. Among the children with caries, 88.0% had active lesions. Dental caries was more prevalent in girls (OR = 1.53, 95%CI: 1.05-2.23), in children from families with a monthly household income ≤US$312.50 (OR = 2.38, 95%CI: 1.65-3.43) and those whose mothers had up to eight years of schooling (OR = 1.55, 95%CI: 1.07-2.23). Lesion activity was significantly associated with mother's schooling ≤ 8 years (OR = 2.15, 95%CI: 1.15-4.00). The prevalence rates of dental caries and lesion activity were high and mainly associated with a lower socioeconomic status and mother's schooling.

Determinant Factors of Untreated Dental Caries and Lesion Activity in Preschool Children Using ICDAS

This cohort study was conducted in Khon Kaen, Thailand, to test the hypothesis that a longer breastfeeding duration increases the risk for dental caries in primary teeth. We collected information on infant feeding practices and potential confounders using a structured questionnaire to interview mothers or caregivers during the second trimester of pregnancy and after birth at 21 days and at 3, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months. Regardless of other liquids and foods, full breastfeeding was defined as feeding breast milk but not formula, while any breastfeeding was feeding breast milk with or without formula. Two calibrated dentists measured dental caries when the children were 3-4 years of age using the decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (dmfs) index following the World Health Organization criteria. Negative binomial regression with a generalized linear model was used to estimate relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using dmfs as an outcome. Log-binomial regression was performed to model the caries prevalence. Of 556 children, 88.1% had dental caries with a mean dmfs of 14.2. Full breastfeeding for 6-11 months was significantly associated with a lower dmfs (adjusted RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.63, 0.93) and a lower caries prevalence (adjusted RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.22, 0.90). The frequency of sleeping while breast- or bottle-feeding increased the caries risk in a dose-response manner. There was no association between duration of any breastfeeding and dental caries. In conclusion, full breastfeeding for 6-11 months may protect against dental caries in primary teeth. Prolonged breastfeeding was not associated with dental caries in this population.

Breastfeeding Duration and Childhood Caries: A Cohort Study

Association between developmental defects of enamel and dental caries in schoolchildren.

AIM: To identify risk factors for cariogenic feeding practices in the first year of life. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: 500 children born within the public health care system in Sao Leopoldo, Brazil, were recruited in a follow-up program. Anthropometric and demographic data were collected soon after birth; data on feeding practices were assessed at 12 months of age using a standardised questionnaire; clinical examination at 4 years of age allowed identification of cariogenic feeding practices in the first year of life and to quantify their relative risks. In the present study, the attributable risks of each child were summed, and the outcome was assessed for the upper quartile of scores for cariogenic feeding practices. STATISTICS: Adjusted relative risks for the outcome were estimated using robust Poisson regression models. RESULTS: A total of 327 children comprised the final study sample, i.e. were followed from birth to 4 years of age. Multivariate analysis showed that the risk of cariogenic feeding practices doubled in children from mothers with less than 5 years of education (RR 2.19, 95%CI 1.26–3.82) and was 70% higher in children from mothers with 5–8 years of education when compared with maternal education >8 years. The other independent variables were not associated with the outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Low maternal education is a risk factor for cariogenic feeding practices, independently of other factors. Mothers with low educational levels should be the focus of child health promotion interventions, especially those aimed at controlling dental caries.

 This study aimed to assess systolic and diastolic heart function changes in patients with history of aortic coarctation using advanced echocardiographic imaging. Additionally, we sought to analyse which severity factors influenced these changes.
 
 
 
 We performed a complete echocardiographic evaluation, with advanced functional analysis, including myocardial work analysis, to a random sample of 53 patients (age 12 to 40 years). These had a previous history of coarctation of the aorta (CoAo), which was either corrected (aortic transisthmic Doppler gradient (Dgrad) ≤20mmHg) or presented a significant residual gradient (Dgrad >20mmHg). A control group of healthy individuals, matched for age, sex and BMI, was subjected to the same evaluation. Selected dependent variables were: E/A, E’, E/E’, atrial strain parameters, biplane ejection fraction, ventricular global longitudinal strain, and global myocardial work (GMW). One-way ANOVA with appropriate post-hoc tests was done to compare the distribution of dependent variables among controls (n = 31), patients with corrected coartation (cCOAO) (n = 36), and patients with residual coartation (rCOAO) (n = 17). Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate the association, in the 53 patients, between the dependent variables and parameters of CoAo severity: systolic blood pressure (SBP), left ventricular indexed mass (LVmass), Dgrad, and the ratio of the narrowest diameter of the aortic arch to the aorta at the diaphragm level (Aoratio). Statistical significance was established as p < 0.05.
 
 
 
 Patients with either cCOAO or rCOAO had lower E’ (p < 0.001), higher E/E’ (p < 0.001), lower atrial reservoir (p < 0.001) and conduit (p < 0.001) strain, when compared with controls (table 1). Patients with rCOAO had higher GMW when compared with either cCOAO or controls (p = 0.002). Multivariable regression analysis showed that both lower atrial reservoir and conduit strain were associated with a narrower aortic arch (lower Aoratio (p = 0.002 and p = 0.011, respectively); higher E/E’ with higher LVmass (p = 0.030); higher GMW with higher LVmass (p = 0.027) and Dgrad (p = 0.035). Patients subsequently submitted to an intervention for coartation treatment (n = 8) had lower atrial conduit (p = 0.007) and higher GMW (p = 0.015) when compared to all other patients (n = 45). Conclusion: Myocardial work emerged as a particularly useful tool as it was both significantly different between CoAo groups, and significantly higher in more severe patients, driven by the LV mass and residual gradient. This analysis may have a role in these patients’ clinical decision-making. Abstract Table 1
