This paper describes the design of a high-speed three-phase switched reluctance machine to drive a compressor for the air management of a fuel-cell system for automotive applications. The machine geometry is optimized by means of a finite-element method coupled to a genetic algorithm. The performance of the optimized machine is evaluated, taking into account the iron and air-friction losses. Some theoretical and numerical results are sustained by the measured ones in the same operating conditions.

Design and Optimization of a Switched Reluctance Motor Driving a Compressor for a PEM Fuel-Cell System for Automotive Applications

The paper describes a neural network method for optimal design of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). The approach maximizes average torque while minimizing torque ripple, considering mainly the stator and rotor geometry parameters. Before optimization takes place, an experimental validation of the SRM model, based on the finite-element method, is performed. The validation predicts average torque and torque ripple characteristics for several motor configurations while stator and rotor pole arcs are varied. The numerical results are highly nonlinear, and a function approximation of the data is therefore difficult to implement. We therefore interpolate the data by using a neural network based on a generalized radial basis function. The computed results allow us to search for optimum motor parameters. The optimum design was confirmed by numerical field solutions.

Switched Reluctance Motor Design Using Neural-Network Method With Static Finite-Element Simulation

Evolutionary computation based multi-objective pole shape optimization of switched reluctance machine

This paper describes an original method for the elaboration of control laws for the Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) for high-speed operation. In this case, the control optimisation relies on the choice of optimal turn-on and turn-off angles to ensure, in general, high global efficiency, in classical supply mode with full-wave voltage. Then, after showing the influence of number of turns, a new supply mode called the continuous mode is described. This mode, used with a higher number of turns, allows to reduce the inverter current rating and hence silicon requirements without compromising performance at high speed. This makes the SRM competitive compared to other technologies (synchronous and induction motors). The simulation results for a 12/8 SRM are presented and compared to those for an induction motor. High-speed-range enhancement of switched reluctance motor with continuous mode for automotive applications

This paper investigates the optimal design method of switched reluctance machines (SRMs) for mitigating torque ripple and improving average torque under the low speed operation. In order to produce high torque for hill climbing or overload start-up of micro electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce the converter capacity, an SRM with four times torque overload capability and two times speed range with constant power is needed. To improve the SRM performance, first, a new method called multiphase excitation (MPE) method for calculating resultant static torque is adopted, which takes the cross-coupling and magnetic saturation into consideration to reduce the calculation error bought by the traditional method called single-phase excitation (SPE) method; second, optimal methods, including parameters sensitivity analysis, multi-objective optimization function, and winding connection types, have been taken to release the magnetic saturation, to improve average torque, and to depress torque ripple. Compared with the initial scheme, the torque ripple is minimized from 55.33% to 14.84% and the average torque is improved by 8.36%. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Optimal Design of Saturated Switched Reluctance Machine for Low Speed Electric Vehicles by Subset Quasi-Orthogonal Algorithm

This paper describes the design of a three-phase switched-reluctance machine in which there are overlaps between the phase current pulses in order to minimize the torque ripple, especially for high-speed operation. The machine dimensions are optimized by the finite-element method coupled to a cyclic process. Theoretical and experimental results obtained with the angle control strategy are presented.
