In a process for producing pig iron and cement clinker in a melting gasifier (3), the charge is at least partially preheated and if required deacidified and prereduced or scrap is used as charge. Coal is blown into a fluidized bed (7) and is gasified, reducing the charge, and pig iron (8), as well as slag (9), are drawn off in the liquid state. If required, the batch of lime introduced into the melting gasifier (3) is preheated and calcined together with a partial amount of iron ore in a preheating shaft (1) and is fed in according to the desired clinker composition.

OF THE DISCLOSURE: In order to effect a reduction to a desired, constant degree as exactly as possible and to achieve a low surplus of carbon, the reduction by a treatment with car-bonaceous reducing agents is effected in such a manner that fine-grained solids which contain higher metal oxides are calcined by a treatment at 800 to 1100°C with hot gases, in which the solids are suspended, the calcined solids are reduced at a temperature in the range from 800 to 1100°Cto form low metal oxides in a stationary fluidized bed, which is supplied with carbonaceous reducing agents and oxygen-containing gases, and the carbonaceous reducing agents are supplied to the stationary fluidized bed at such a rate as to reduce the higher metal oxides to low metal oxides, to maintain the reduction temperature in the sta-tionary fluidized bed and to ensure that the discharged matter has the desired carbon content. The exhaust gas from the stationary fluidized bed is supplied as secondary gas to the calcining step, and fuel is supplied to the calcining step at such a rate that the total of the heat generated by the combustion of said fuel and of the heat supplied by the exhaust gas provides the heat which is required for the calcination.

Process of reducing higher metal oxides to lower metal oxides

A weatherable ferrite agglomerate is prepared by establishing compacted or other coherent bodies consisting of a mixture of fine particles of lime and of iron oxide, and heating the bodies, in a reducing atmosphere, at a suitable temperature up to about 2100° F; under these circumstances, the lime and iron oxide react to form dicalcium ferrite, yeilding agglomerate bodies that are useful for furnace feed, as for a blast furnace. The iron oxide may conveniently consist of one or more waste oxides from iron and steel making operations, and the lime can be supplied as limestone, with a preliminary heating of the mixture, before or after forming the coherent bodies, to calcine the stone to lime. The agglomerate is advantageous in providing a way of using waste iron values and of supplying lime as such, for furnace operations, with practicality because of the weatherability which ordinary (calcined) lime does not have, while avoiding difficulties of making sintered bodies or the like.

The second substance has a contact angle with the molten metal less than that of the first compound, thereby causing the composite to be more wettable in the molten metal as compared to the first compound. This helps the composite to penetrate into the molten metal, resulting in the first compound efficiently reacting with the impurity contained within the molten metal. In one example of the invention, an desulfurising agent for iron and steel comprises calcium carbide having a coating of titania.

AN IRON-CONTAINING LIME PRODUCT RESULTS, PREFERABLY IN DISCRETE, NON-CLINKERED PIECES, HAVING GOOD PHYSICAL PROPERTES AND SPECIAL ADVANTAGEOUS OF REACTIVE AVAILABILITY WHEN USED AS LIME FEED IN IRON AND STEELMAKING OPERATIONS, ACCOMPLISHED BY EFFICIENT RECOVERY AND USE OF IRON VALUES.
