Testing soils for copper, iron, manganese, and zinc.

The dwarfed conifer forests occurring on the coastal terraces of Mendocino County, California, are oligotrophic communities containing edaphic endemics as dominants. Species distributions and community characteristics are traced along a gradient in podzolization of the soils from these pygmy conifer stands on highly weathered terrace spodosols, to redwood stands on weakly developed slope spodsols. Vegetation stature, canopy closure, species richness, litter biomass and pH generally decrease along the gradient as podzolization and nutrient impoverishment increase, whereas soil organic matter and available water capacity tend to be highest at the gradient extremes. Analyses of pygmy forest soils show low levels of macro— and micro—nutrients, and high levels of exchangeable aluminum. When ordinations of stands based on vegetational data are compared with rankings based on environmental data, changes in pH of the soil A horizon are found to correlate most highly with vegetation changes. Nutrient loss and acidification, initiated by varying rates of soil weathering in the pygmy forest region, may be aggravated, in the case of pygmy forest soils, by a series of feedback effects, including solubilization of possibly toxic amounts of aluminum by low pH, which may contribute to the observed plant stunting and shrinking pools of nutrients in the biomass. A ranking of stands along a soil nutrient gradient, based on field observations and presence data for species, correlated successively less strongly with ordinations computed by similarity—projection, Bray—Curtis method, importance—projection, principal components analysis, and factor analysis. Although these ordinations were expected to produce distortions in the interstand relations due to the modal and even polymodal nature of species response curves and to the presence of species not spanning the range of the data set, additional distortions due to variability in sample data were also highlighted.

Edaphic Climax Pattern of the Pygmy Forest Region of California

In a field trial using a continuous function design, calcium carbonate was applied to a nitrogen deficient Hawaiian Oxisol at rates which increased along the plant row from 0 to 22 tons/ha, producing a gradient in soil pH from 4.7 to 7.1. Inoculated legumes representing 18 species were grown.

Comparative lime requirements of tropical and temperate legumes

: Heavy metal uptake by Cyperus esculentus from 15 highly contaminated freshwater sediments under reduced (flooded) and oxidized (upland) disposal conditions was investigated in the greenhouse. Heavy metal uptake by Spartina alterniflora and Distichlis spicata from 14 highly contaminated saltwater sediments under flooded disposal conditions was also investigated in the greenhouse. The freshwater sediments were collected from waterways in the Great Lakes area; the saltwater sediments were collected from the gulf and Atlantic coastal areas. The sediments were transported to the laboratory, where each sediment was mixed thoroughly and divided in half. One half of the sediment was potted and maintained in a flooded state; the other half was air dried and ground before being potted (upland condition). Cyperus esculentus was grown from tubers planted in the freshwater sediments. Seeds of S. alterniflora and D. spicata were planted in the saltwater sediments. All plants were allowed to grow to maximum vegetative yield (C. esculentus, 90 days; S. alterniflora and D. spicata, 131 days). The moisture content of the upland sediments was maintained between field capacity of the sediment and wilting point of the plant. The plants were harvested and analyzed for the heavy metals zinc, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, arsenic, mercury, nickel, chromium, and lead. The sediments were analyzed for total heavy metals, diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable heavy metals, heavy metals in the sediment interstitial water, oil and grease, pH, calcium carbonate equivalent, total sulfur, total phosphorus, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and organic matter.

Influence of Disposal Environment on Availability and Plant Uptake of Heavy Metals in Dredged Material.

SUMMARY Eight soil Mn tests, namely, CH3COONH4-, Mg(NO3)2-, H3PO4-, hydroquinone-, 3m-NH4H2PO4-,1·5m-NH4H2PO4- and EDTA-extractable Mn and total Mn were evaluated for their ability to predict Mn uptake by maize (Zea mays L.) on 63 soils of diverse origin. Regression equations were derived by comparing Mn uptake with each test in combination with pH. The best prediction of Mn uptake was provided by a combination of CH3COONH4-extractable Mn and pH; 52·9 % of the variability in Mn uptake was accounted for by these two variables. EDTA and H3PO4-extractable Mn were superior to the other soil Mn tests in predicting Mn uptake. The effect of soil properties on the extractability of soil Mn by each extractant was analysed statistically. Only with hydroquinone-extractable Mn did the soil variables investigated account for a major portion of the variability in the Mn test. The soil variables most often correlated significantly with the Mn test were pH and total Mn. Organic carbon and clay contents were significant only in determining EDTA- and Mg(NO3)2-extractable Mn, respectively.
