The most intense, F region irregularities in the high-latitude ionosphere appear to be produced by convective plasma processes and in particular, by the fluid (gradient drift) interchange instability. Such irregularities are produced by convectively mixing plasma across a mean plasma density gradient with the transport of higher-density plasma into regions of lower-density plasma (and vice versa) leading to the development of an irregularity spectrum that extends in scale from about 10 km down to the ion gyroradius. The mean plasma density gradient that must be present to allow irregularity production by this interchange process appears to be associated with larger-scale (>10 km) plasma structure produced by other means. Because much of the recent progress on this research topic stems from this recognition, a significant portion of this review is dedicated to a description of the characteristics and processes of 10-km plasma structure and their relationships to those of smaller-scale irregularities. From this review, we synthesize a descriptive model of plasma structures in the high-latitude F layer that unifies most of the diverse and independent observations. For the large-scale plasma processes, the model includes (1) the formation of 1000-km-scale “patches” in the polar cap from solar-produced plasma that is transported poleward from lower latitudes; (2) the reconfiguration of patches as they convect into the auroral region and become the latitudinally confined, but longitudinally extended, plasma density enhancements near the equatorward auroral boundary; and (3) the production of localized enhancements and depletions along the poleward auroral boundary by soft-particle precipitation and large but localized electric fields. In the model, the most intense, smaller-scale irregularities are in spatial proximity to these large-scale plasma features, the implication being that the presence of the latter allows formation of the former. The irregularity characteristics are consistent with production by the instability and a morphology controlled by (1) a “slip” velocity (i.e., plasma drift relative to the neutral gas) that is moderately small except in regions of nonuniform plasma convection or under time-varying conditions (e.g., substorms, pulsation events) and (2) a highly conducting auroral E layer that damps irregularity growth and enhances decay. The final irregularity spectrum appears to be produced by (1) global convective processes acting on solar-produced plasma at the largest scales (>50 km), (2) particle precipitation at scales greater than 10 km, (3) perhaps some form of wave activity around 10 km, and (4) the instability at the smaller scales (<10 km).

High-Latitude F-Region Irregularities: A Review and Synthesis

An extensive VHF/UHF scintillation data base covering the frequency range of VHF to a few gigahertz has been utilized to determine the magnitudes of phase and intensity scintillations and their temporal/spatial structures during the sunspot maximum and minimum periods. The equatorial portion of the study has been based on geostationary satellite observations at Huancayo, a station on the magnetic equator, and at Ascension Island, which is an equatorial anomaly station having an extremely disturbed irregularity environment. The high-latitude part of the study is based on quasistationary satellite measurements at a polar cap location (Thule) and two auroral locations (Goose Bay and Tromso). The Tromso observations are augmented with the Defense Nuclear Agency HiLat satellite beacon measurements during the solar minimum period. The data indicate a strong solar cycle control of scintillation activity at all locations, resulting in a drastic reduction of the magnitudes and occurrence of scintillations during the current solar minimum period. This pattern is consistent with both a reduction of F region ionization density and a reduction of irregularity generation in the solar minimum period. At the magnetic equator the magnitude of scintillations at 1.5 GHz seldom exceeds 3 dB with the percentage occurrence > 2 dB varying from 70% during high sunspot conditions to 30% during low sunspot conditions. At the crest of the equatorial anomaly, on the other hand, during the solar maximum in 1979, fades of 20 dB at 1.5 GHz are observed 30% of the time. At a decreased level of solar activity in 1982, a similar occurrence level is obtained at 1.5 GHz for fade levels of only 5 dB. During the solar minimum period, 1.5-GHz scintillations are virtually absent. Phase scintillation measurements made at Ascension Island indicate that the median value of rms phase deviation is about 5 rad for detrend intervals of 100 s. In the auroral region, during the solar maximum period under magnetically disturbed conditions, the median values of scintillation fades and rms phase deviation (82-s detrend) at 250 MHz are observed to be 15 dB and 3 rad, respectively. At Thule, located deep within the polar cap, the median values of scintillation fades and rms phase deviation at 250 MHz attain values as large as 20 dB and 4 rad during the sunspot maximum period. Unlike Ascension Island the scintillation activity at high-latitude stations exhibits a threshold effect and does not decrease until 1983. However, in 1986 with sunspot numbers in the vicinity of 10, fade levels as low as 5 dB at 250 MHz are recorded in the polar cap and auroral stations only 5% of the time. It is noted that at auroral locations the most prominent feature, namely the existence of magnetic L shell-aligned irregularity sheets, is equally evident at both sunspot maximum and minimum.

Ionospheric constraints on VHF/UHF communications links during solar maximum and minimum periods

[1] We present a global view of large-scale ionospheric disturbances during the main phase of a major geomagnetic storm. We find that the low-latitude, auroral, and polar latitude regions are coupled by processes that redistribute thermal plasma throughout the system. For the large geomagnetic storm on 20 November 2003, we examine data from the high-latitude incoherent scatter radars at Millstone Hill, Sondrestrom, and EISCAT Tromso, with SuperDARN HF radar observations of the high-latitude convection pattern and DMSP observations of in situ plasma parameters in the topside ionosphere. We combine these with north polar maps of stormtime plumes of enhanced total electron content (TEC) derived from a network of GPS receivers. The polar tongue of ionization (TOI) is seen to be a continuous stream of dense cold plasma entrained in the global convection pattern. The dayside source of the TOI is the plume of storm enhanced density (SED) transported from low latitudes in the postnoon sector by the subauroral disturbance electric field. Convection carries this material through the dayside cusp and across the polar cap to the nightside where the auroral F region is significantly enhanced by the SED material. The three incoherent scatter radars provided full altitude profiles of plasma density, temperatures, and vertical velocity as the TOI plume crossed their different positions, under the cusp, in the center of the polar cap, and at the midnight oval/polar cap boundary. Greatly elevated F peak density (>1.5E12 m 3 ) and low electron and ion temperatures (2500 K at the F peak altitude) characterize the SED/TOI plasma observed at all points along its high-latitude trajectory. For this event, SED/TOI F region TEC (150–1000 km) was 50 TECu both in the cusp and in the center of the polar cap. Multiradar observations of the polar tongue of ionization

A detailed study is presented of simultaneous density and electric field fluctuation spectra over a large-scale length range seen in association with large structured convective plasma flows, field-aligned currents, and particle precipitation at high latitudes. The data were obtained for two Dynamics Explorer 2 orbits at two different altitudes within the F region and the topside ionosphere. The observations are compared with results of nonlinear simulations of shear flow-driven instabilities and predictions based on two-dimensional turbulence arguments, with particular reference to the Kelvin-Helmholtz process.

Simultaneous density and electric field fluctuation spectra associated with velocity shears in the auroral oval

A general theory is developed for both electrojet waves and ion cyclotron and current convective waves observed above 120 km altitude. Previously defined electrojet instability theories are extended to encompass the effects of the magnetic field on ions and the presence of field-aligned currents. The ion-cyclotron (E) waves are assumed produced by the two-stream instability in regions dominated by ion magnetization effects. Field-aligned and cross-field currents drive the E waves, which have displayed threshold drift velocities (TDV) sensitive to conditions at altitudes with effective electron/ion and anomalous electron collision frequencies. The electron density gradients in the region affect the magnitude of the TDV for waves on scales of tens of meters. Recombinational damping increases the TDV for marginal damping of two-stream E waves and establishes a TDV for excitation of large-scale gradient drift waves which propagate nearly perpendicularly to the magnetic field and may have only 10-20 m wavelengths.

Theory of plasma waves in the auroral E-region

: We present, in this paper, an overview of theories of naturally occurring high latitude E and F region ionospheric irregularities. (For a review of artificially-induced irregularities, e.g., from ionospheric 'heating' experiments, see Fejer 1979.) Emphasis is placed on recent results, particularly with regard to sources of high latitude irregularities. Physical mechanisms are stressed with extensive mathematical analysis avoided. Expertise in plasma physics has not been assumed. We summarize the recent and previous theoretical literature dealing with F region irregularities, and we concentrate on E region irregularity phenomena.
