The Moessbauer spectrometer on Spirit measured the oxidation state of Fe, identified Fe-bearing phases, and measured relative abundances of Fe among those phases for surface materials on the plains and in the Columbia Hills of Gusev crater. Eight Fe-bearing phases were identified: olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, nanophase ferric oxide (npOx), hematite, goethite, and a Fe(3+)-sulfate. Adirondack basaltic rocks on the plains are nearly unaltered (Fe(3+)/Fe(sub T) Px), and minor npOx and magnetite. Columbia Hills basaltic rocks are nearly unaltered (Peace and Backstay), moderately altered (WoolyPatch, Wishstone, and Keystone), and pervasively altered (e.g., Clovis, Uchben, Watchtower, Keel, and Paros with Fe(3+)/Fe(sub T) approx.0.6-0.9). Fe from pyroxene is greater than Fe from olivine (Ol sometimes absent), and Fe(2+) from Ol+Px is 40-49% and 9-24% for moderately and pervasively altered materials, respectively. Ilmenite (Fe from Ilm approx.3-6%) is present in Backstay, Wishstone, Keystone, and related rocks along with magnetite (Fe from Mt approx. 10-15%). Remaining Fe is present as npOx, hematite, and goethite in variable proportions. Clovis has the highest goethite content (Fe from Gt=40%). Goethite (alpha-FeOOH) is mineralogical evidence for aqueous processes because it has structural hydroxide and is formed under aqueous conditions. Relatively unaltered basaltic soils (Fe(3+)/Fe(sub T) approx. 0.3) occur throughout Gusev crater (approx. 60-80% Fe from Ol+Px, approx. 10-30% from npOx, and approx. 10% from Mt). PasoRobles soil in the Columbia Hills has a unique occurrence of high concentrations of Fe(3+)-sulfate (approx. 65% of Fe). Magnetite is identified as a strongly magnetic phase in Martian soil and dust.

The volume of impact melt relative to that of the transient cavity is known to increase with the magnitude of the impact event. This paper investigates the influence of that phenomenon on the nature of terrestrial impact craters. A model of impact melting was used to estimate the volume of melt produced during the impact of chondritic projectiles into granite targets at velocities of 15, 25, and 50 km per sec. The results were compared with observed melt volumes at terrestrial craters, which were collated from the literature and paired with the transient-cavity diameters of their respective craters. Results show that the record on terrestrial craters is not inconsistent with the predictions of the model.

An analysis of differential impact melt‐crater scaling and implications for the terrestrial impact record

(Received 1996 August 30; accepted in revised form 1997 January 30) Abstract-Imaging of asteroids Gaspra and Ida and laboratory studies of asteroidal meteorites show that im- pacts undoubtedly played an important role in the histories of asteroids and resulted in shock metamorphism and the formation of breccias and melt rocks. However, in recent years, impact has also been called upon by numerous authors as the heat source for some of the major geological processes that took place on asteroids, such as global thermal metamorphism of chondrite parent bodies and a variety of melting and igneous events. The latter were proposed to explain the origin of ureilites, aubrites, mesosiderites, the Eagle Station pallasites, acapulcoites, lodranites, and the IAB, IIICD, and IIE irons. We considered fundamental observations from terrestrial impact craters, combined with results from laboratory shock experiments and theoretical consider- ations, to evaluate the efficiency of impact heating and melting of asteroids. Studies of terrestrial impact craters and relevant shock experiments suggest that impact heating of aster- oids will produce two types of impact melts: (1) large-scale whole rock melts (total melts, not partial melts) at high shock pressure and (2) localized melts formed at the scale of the mineral constituents (mineral specific or grain boundary melting) at intermediate shock pressures. The localized melts form minuscule amounts of melt that quench and solidify in sifu, thus preventing them from pooling into larger melt bodies. Partial melting as defined in petrology has not been observed in natural and experimental shock metamor- phism and is thermodynamically impossible in a shock wave-induced transient compression of rocks. The total impact melts produced represent a minuscule portion of the displaced rock volume of the parent crater. Internal differentiation by fractional crystallization is absent in impact melt sheets of craters of sizes that can be tolerated by asteroids, and impact melt rocks are usually clast-laden. Thermal metamorphism of country rocks by impact is extremely minor. Experimental and theoretical considerations suggest that (1) single dis- ruptive impacts cannot raise the average global temperature of strength- or gravity-dominated asteroids by more than a few degrees; (2) cumulative global heating of asteroids by multiple impacts is ineffective for asteroids less than a few hundred kilometers in diameter; (3) small crater size, low gravity, and low impact velocity suggest that impact melt volume in single asteroidal impacts is a very small (-0.014.1%) fraction of the total displaced crater volume; (4) total impact melt volume formed during the typical lifetime of an asteroid is a small fraction (<0.001) of the volume of impact-generated debris; and (5) much of the impact melt generated on asteroidal targets is ejected from craters with velocities greater than escape velocity and, thus, not retained on the asteroid. The inescapable conclusion from these observations and calculations is that impacts cannot have been the heat source for the origin of the meteorite types listed above, and we must turn to processes other than impact, such as decay of short-lived radionuclides or electromagnetic induction during an early T-tauri phase of the Sun to explain heating and melting of the parent bodies of these meteorites.

Constraints on the role of impact heating and melting in asteroids

Terrestrial impact melt rocks and glasses

A sheet of clast-laden impact melt 230 m thick and 55 km in diameter forms an annular plateau surrounding an uplift of shocked anorthosite within the moderately eroded Manicouagan structure. Three gradational units of the melt sheet are characterized with respect to grain size, inclusions, texture, and mineralogy. The melt rocks as a group are chemically homogeneous with a bulk composition similar to that of latite and with no statistically significant regional chemical variations. The melt is not completely chemically homogeneous as a local mafic variant represented by two samples with poikilitic texture was found. These poikilitic rocks texturally resemble some Apollo 17 impact melt rocks and are inferred to have had a similar origin and thermal history.

Manicouagan Impact Melt, Quebec, 1, Stratigraphy, petrology, and chemistry

Chemical, petrographic, isotopic and field studies of igneous-textured rocks within the Manicouagan structure indicate that they are the product of impact melting. Features of the melt sheet include a high degree of textural variation combined with chemical homogeneity. The textures record a complex thermal history and are due primarily to the interaction of clasts with melt. An inverse correlation between clast abundance and matrix grain size allows the melt sheet to be divided into three vertically gradational units of variable thickness. Chemical homogeneity indicates that the impact melting process has the first order effect of homogenizing heterogeneous target material. The process, however, is not totally effective, because significant (although small) deviations from a calculated average composition exist, particularly in the basal clast-laden unit. These differences depend on clast composition and abundance. The results presented here are consistent with proposed models for the generation of terrestrial and lunar impact melts.
