Electrocatalytic activity of simple and modified Fe–P electrodeposits for hydrogen evolution from alkaline media

Optimum conditions have been established for the electrodeposition of amorphous fe-P alloys from sulphate electrolytes, containing complex-forming additives (glycine and oxalic acid) and sodium hypophosphite. It was shown that the increase of pH, current density and glycine content in the plating solution leads to a decrease of the amount of phosphorus in the Fe-P alloy. The cathodic current yield decreases with the increase of glycine concentration in the electrolyte. Small amounts of Cu2+ and Mn2+ act as brighteners. Sodium hypophosphite exerts a depolarizing effect on the alloy formation process. This effect is more pronounced at low hypophosphite concentrations and low cathodic current densities (CCD). The measurement of the cathodic potential during the deposition of the investigated alloy provides no evidence for a concentration change of phosphorus in the electrodeposited layers. No qualitative alterations of the surface morphology of the amorphous coatings studied have been established as the composition of the alloy and the plating conditions are changed.

Electrochemical preparation of amorphous Fe-P alloys

The electrochemical nucleation of mercury on a platinum electrode has been studied in the presence of some organic compounds used in the deposition of bright galvanic coatings. It is established that these organic additives do not effect the thermodynamics of the nucleation process but block the electrode surface, thus decreasing the rate of nucleus formation. It is found that the growth of the stable metal clusters is inhibited in the presence of the organic substances which leads to a marked increase of the maximal number of nuclei formed on the electrode surface.

Electrochemical nucleation of mercury on platinum in the presence of organic additives

The anodic behaviour of electrodeposited amorphous Fe-Ni-P alloy coatings with different Ni: Fe ratios has been studied. It is established that the content of P on the surface of the coatings after their dissolution in acidic medium increases considerably. The change in composition and morphology of the alloys along the depth of the cracks when different potentials are applied to the samples immersed in 0.5 M H2 S04 is traced. The presence of a peculiar topography of the surface layer emerging after anodic dissolution is shown.

Anodic behaviour of amorphous electroplated alloy coatings

SUMMARYThe relationship was studied between the corrosion-electrochemical state of Fe-P and Ni-Fe-P alloys containing different amounts of Fe and the composition of the surface film, which plays a crucial role in the corrosion resistance. The electrodeposited amorphous alloys Fe-P, Ni-Fe29-P18 and Ni-Fe0. 7-P18.7 are not passivated in 0.1N H2SO4 The anodic dissolution rate in the active state is abruptly reduced with a increase in the percentage of Ni content in the alloy. The elemental composition of the surface layers and the type of chemical compounds corresponding to depths down to 1000 A after treatment at the stationary corrosion potential and after anodic dissolution in active state at the maximum rate were determined by XPS methods. The ratio between the basic components of the Ni, Fe and P alloys in the surface films (especially as a result of the treatment) is quite different from that in the bulk.
