Aluminium hybrid composites are a new generation of metal matrix composites that have the potentials of satisfying the recent demands of advanced engineering applications. These demands are met due to improved mechanical properties, amenability to conventional processing technique and possibility of reducing production cost of aluminium hybrid composites. The performance of these materials is mostly dependent on selecting the right combination of reinforcing materials since some of the processing parameters are associated with the reinforcing particulates. A few combinations of reinforcing particulates have been conceptualized in the design of aluminium hybrid composites. This paper attempts to review the different combination of reinforcing materials used in the processing of hybrid aluminium matrix composites and how it affects the mechanical, corrosion and wear performance of the materials. The major techniques for fabricating these materials are briefly discussed and research areas for further improvement on aluminium hybrid composites are suggested.

Comparison of microstructure and mechanical properties of A356 aluminum alloy/Al2O3 composites fabricated by stir and compo-casting processes

This work investigated the influence of graphite on the wear behavior of Al 7075/Al 2 O 3 /5 wt.% graphite hybrid composite. The investigation reveals the effectiveness of incorporation of graphite in the composite for gaining wear reduction. The Al 7075 (aluminium alloy 7075) reinforced with Al 2 O 3 –graphite were investigated. The composites were fabricated using liquid metallurgy route. Ceramic particles along with solid lubricating materials were incorporated into aluminium alloy matrix to accomplish reduction in both wear resistance and coefficient of friction. The Al 7075/Al 2 O 3 /graphite hybrid composite was prepared with 5 wt.% graphite particles addition and 2, 4, 6 and 8 wt.% of Al 2 O 3 . The hardness, tensile strength, flexural strength and compression strength of the Al 7075–Al 2 O 3 –graphite hybrid composites are found to be increased by increased weight percentage of ceramic phase. The wear properties of the hybrid composites containing graphite exhibited the superior wear-resistance properties.

Study on mechanical and wear properties of Al 7075/Al2O3/graphite hybrid composites

Aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced with micro and nano-sized Al2O3 particles are widely used for high performance applications such as automotive, military, aerospace and electricity industries because of their improved physical and mechanical properties. In this study, in order to improve the wettability and distribution of reinforcement particles within the matrix, a novel three step mixing method was used. The process included heat treatment of micro and nano Al2O3 particles, injection of heat-treated particles within the molten A356 aluminum alloy by inert argon gas and stirring the melt at different speeds. The influence of various processing parameters such as heat treatment of particles, injection process, stirring speed, reinforcement particle size and weight percentage of reinforcement particles on the microstructure and mechanical properties of composites was investigated. The matrix grain size, morphology and distribution of Al2O3 nanoparticles were recognized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscope (OM) equipped with image analyzer, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Also, the hardness and compression strength of samples was investigated. The results showed the poor incorporation of nano particles in the aluminum melt prepared by the common condition. However, the use of heat-treated particles, injection of particles and the stirring system improved the wettability and distribution of the nano particles within the aluminum melt. In addition, it was revealed that the amount of hardness, compressive strength and porosity increased as weight percentage of nano Al2O3 particles increased.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Al2O3 micro and nano composites fabricated by stir casting

Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) have evoked a keen interest in recent times for potential applications in aerospace and automotive industries owing to their superior strength to weight ratio and high temperature resistance. The widespread adoption of particulate metal matrix composites for engineering applications has been hindered by the high cost of producing components. Although several technical challenges exist with casting technology yet it can be used to overcome this problem. Achieving a uniform distribution of reinforcement within the matrix is one such challenge, which affects directly on the properties and quality of composite material. In the present study a modest attempt has been made to develop aluminium based silicon carbide particulate MMCs with an objective to develop a conventional low cost method of producing MMCs and to obtain homogenous dispersion of ceramic material. To achieve these objectives two step-mixing method of stir casting technique has been adopted and subsequent property analysis has been made. Aluminium (98.41% C.P) and SiC (320-grit) has been chosen as matrix and reinforcement material respectively. Experiments have been conducted by varying weight fraction of SiC (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%), while keeping all other parameters constant. The results indicated that the ‘developed method’ is quite successful to obtain uniform dispersion of reinforcement in the matrix. An increasing trend of hardness and impact strength with increase in weight percentage of SiC has been observed. The best results (maximum hardness 45.5 BHN & maximum impact strength of 36 N-m.) have been obtained at 25% weight fraction of SiC. The results were further justified by comparing with other investigators.
