This paper presents a new circuit realization of the space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) strategy. An SVPWM control integrated circuit (IC) has been developed using state of-the-art field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology. The proposed SVPWM control scheme can be realized using only a single FPGA (XC4010) from Xilinx, Inc. The output fundamental frequency can be adjusted from 0.094 to 1500 Hz. The pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching frequency can be set from 381 Hz to 48.84 kHz. The delay time for the PWM gating signals is adjustable. This SVPWM IC can also be included in the digital current control loop for stator current regulation. The designed SVPWM IC can be incorporated with a digital signal processor (DSP) to provide a simple and effective solution for high-performance AC drives. Simulation and experimental results are given to verify the implemented SVPWM control IC.

FPGA realization of space-vector PWM control IC for three-phase PWM inverters

Selective harmonic elimination/control has been a widely researched alternative to traditional pulse-width modulation techniques. Previous and current work has made fundamental assumptions that enforce output waveform quarter-wave symmetry, presumably in order to reduce the complexity of the resulting equations. However, the quarter-wave symmetric assumption is not strictly necessary. It restricts the solution space, which can result in sub-optimal solutions with regards to the uncontrolled harmonic distribution. A more general formulation is proposed, removing the quarter-wave symmetry constraint for two classes of the m-level, n-harmonic harmonic control problem. The special cases of two- and three-level harmonic elimination are presented in detail along with representative solutions for each harmonic control problem. New solutions previously unattainable based on quarter-wave symmetric techniques are identified.

Selective harmonic control: a general problem formulation and selected solutions

This paper presents the design and implementation of a motor control IC for permanent magnet AC (PMAC) servo motors using the field programmable gate array (FPGA). This paper develops a hardware architecture for the digital control of PMAC servo motors. The proposed control structure has also been realized using FPGAs from Xilinx Inc. All the control functions, including the PWM waveform generation, current control, vector control, velocity control, and position control have been realized using FPGA based programmable logic gates. The constructed PMAC control IC includes 25000 logic gates and is realized using 8-bit integer arithmetic. Experimental results are given to verify the implemented PMAC control IC.

Design and implementation of all FPGA-based motor control IC for permanent magnet AC servo motors

The invention relates to a method for measuring currents in a motor controller. Some current sensing devices placed on the motor wires or inside the motor controller provide low amplitude output signals thus complicating sampling and data processing. In order to improve the signal/noise ratio, an oversampling technique is disclosed which makes used of a differential transmission of the output signal. Further, by applying intelligent sorting techniques on the sampled data, a substantial improvement in the signal/noise ratio can be obtained. The invention also concerns a motor controller using this method, and discloses the use of a power card and a control card, where the current sensing device is placed on the power card and a differential amplifier is placed on the control card. The gain of the differential amplifier is controlled by components placed on the power card as well as on the control card.

Simulation and experimental results are given to verify the implemented SVPWM control IC.

FPGA-based SVPWM control IC for 3-phase PWM inverters

An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is presented which acts in conjunction with a standard microcontroller (the 8051 family) to produce a compact and effective AC motor control system. The system is based on synchronous pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and is capable of implementing both natural and regular sampling PWM as well as the optimum harmonic elimination and distortion minimization techniques. Lookup table size is minimized using information stored over one 30 degrees segment of the three-phase switching patterns. Disturbance-free carrier ratio changes are implemented under microprocessor control giving a wide speed range and a smooth efficient transition to six-step operation. The necessary dead-time circuitry to ensure that a delay exists between commutation of the devices in the power converter is also implemented on the ASIC, as well as an output inhibit control for power converter protection. >
