Support materials for PEMFC and DMFC electrocatalysts—A review

In the present study, an in-depth investigation on the structural transformation in a mesoporous γ-MnO2 cathode during electrochemical reaction in a zinc-ion battery (ZIB) has been undertaken. A combination of in situ Synchrotron XANES and XRD studies reveal that the tunnel-type parent γ-MnO2 undergoes a structural transformation to spinel-type Mn(III) phase (ZnMn2O4) and two new intermediary Mn(II) phases, namely, tunnel-type γ-ZnxMnO2 and layered-type L-ZnyMnO2, and that these phases with multioxidation states coexist after complete electrochemical Zn-insertion. On successive Zn-deinsertion/extraction, a majority of these phases with multioxidation states is observed to revert back to the parent γ-MnO2 phase. The mesoporous γ-MnO2 cathode, prepared by a simple ambient temperature strategy followed by low-temperature annealing at 200 °C, delivers an initial discharge capacity of 285 mAh g–1 at 0.05 mA cm–2 with a defined plateau at around 1.25 V vs Zn/Zn2+. Electrochemically Induced Structural Transformation in a γ-MnO2 Cathode of a High Capacity Zinc-Ion Battery System

The support plays an important role for supported metal catalysts by positioning itself as a macromolecular ligand, which conditions the nature of the active site and contributes indirectly but also sometimes directly to the reactivity. Metal species such as nanoparticles, clusters, or single atoms can be deposited on carbon materials for various catalytic reactions. All the carbon materials used as catalyst support constitute a large family of compounds that can vary both at textural and at structural levels. Today, the recent developments of well-controlled synthesis methodologies, advanced characterization techniques, and modeling tools allow one to correlate the relationships between metal/support/reactant at the molecular level. Based on these considerations, in this Review article, we wish to provide some answers to the question "How and why anchoring metal nanoparticles, clusters, or single atoms on carbon materials for catalysis?". To do this, we will rely on both experimental and theoretical studies. We will first analyze what sites are available on the surface of a carbon support for the anchoring of the active phase. Then, we will describe some important effects in catalysis inherent to the presence of a carbon-type support (metal-support interaction, confinement, spillover, and surface functional group effects). These effects will be commented on by putting into perspective catalytic results obtained in numerous reactions of thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, or photocatalysis.

A Theory/Experience Description of Support Effects in Carbon-Supported Catalysts.

Unique reactivity in Pt/CNT catalyzed hydrolytic dehydrogenation of ammonia borane

In this study, ordered macroporous carbon with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected pore structure and a graphitic pore wall was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of benzene using inverse silica opal as the template. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrometry, nitrogen adsorption, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques were used to characterize the carbon samples. The electrochemical properties of the carbon materials as a carbon-based anode for lithium-ion batteries and as a Pt catalyst support for room-temperature methanol electrochemical oxidation were examined. It was observed that the CVD method is a simple route to fabrication of desired carbon nanostructures, affording a carbon with graphitic pore walls and uniform pores. Synthesis of Graphitic Ordered Macroporous Carbon with a Three-Dimensional Interconnected Pore Structure for Electrochemical Applications

The metal particle size and structure of the metal−support interface of platinum supported on Vulcan XC-72 (a commercial catalyst used in platinum fuel-cell electrodes) and on carbon nanofibers (CNF) have been determined with extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). The CNF-supported Pt catalysts were synthesized using a homogeneous deposition precipitation (HDP) method. The amount of acidic oxygen groups on the CNF surface was modified by treatment in an inert atmosphere at different temperatures. The average first shell Pt−Pt coordination number (∼5.5) detected in Pt/CNF is much smaller than for Pt/Vulcan XC-72 (∼8.2). The presence of oxygen-containing groups in the CNF support most probably leads to the stabilization of small Pt particles on the CNF support.
