An IoT based real time energy monitoring system for controlling and monitoring of a switchgear industry is discussed in the present work. Raspberry Pi has been selected for this purpose due to low cost and a highly reliable technology for monitoring the energy consumption of the industry. The Raspberry Pi is used with Node.js programming language to collect the data (various electrical parameters) from the existing energy meters of the industry and to store it locally, for accessing it through Laptop or mobile phone using Grafana. The monitoring system is found be useful to the industry to understand the day-to-day energy pattern, which is essential to facilitate energy conservation measures for minimizing energy consumption.

Remote Wireless Automatic Meter Reading System Based on GPRS

Building operations are responsible for a large amount of energy consumption therefore the development of energy-saving solutions for buildings represents a relevant challenge with a major impact on our global community. This paper presents the design and implementation of an IoT (Internet of Things) prototype for monitoring energy consumption which was developed by a group of undergraduate students to reinforce their disciplinary and cross-disciplinary competencies by applying the challenge-based learning model. This educative approach allows the students to provide a solution for a relevant problem by using modern technology and applying adequate methodologies. The developed prototype has been installed in the mechatronic laboratory building and has been evaluated by the users for six months. Obtained results show that the prototype has provided benefits by identifying energy management issues in the laboratory also from the academic perspective students that participated in the challenge had superior performance in comparison with the students that previously used the traditional learning model.

Implementing an IoT Energy Monitoring System Using the Challenge-based Learning Model

This work presented the design, development, and implementation of a low-cost IoT system for real-time monitoring of electrical consumption and environment parameters inside social housing. The IoT monitoring system is composed of a set of remote measurement nodes that wirelessly sense and transmit records of the air temperature and relative humidity inside the house as well as the voltage, current, and power consumed by several electrical devices. A server coordinator composed of a Raspberry Pi was used for the interaction with the sensors through the Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol and allowed the measured data packaging, fragmentation, transfer, storage, and cloud upload for remote multiuser visualization. The system was experimentally evaluated in an inhabited single-story house under tropical climate conditions. Operation tests indicate a successful performance of the protocols implemented for remote visualization and cloud storage. Moreover, an analysis of measured data allows the feasibility of identifying the occupants’ energy consumption patterns and their relationship with the search for comfortable environmental conditions. Thus, the proposed friendly framework is a promising alternative to energy management. Its implementation in embedded Linux-based systems provides the flexibility to integrate control strategies based on artificial intelligence.

IoT System for the Continuous Electrical and Environmental Monitoring into Mexican Social Housing Evaluated under Tropical Climate Conditions

The research aims to design and implement a prototype for an automated system that reads electrical energy meters for the consumers and collects these readings in a central unit via the World Wide Web (the Internet). This is done by adding a camera that automatically captures the meter reading of the electric meter as an alternative to the mobile meter reader. This meter reading image is processed and the value of the meter reading is extracted by using a Raspberry Pi device and the Python language depending on OCR (Optical Character Recognition) algorithm and then sent via Internet and collected from all consumers through the Internet cloud in a database in the Central Electricity Department. After collecting this information, it can be used to monitor electrical loads, record invoices, and give reports about loads and costs to consumers, and thus participate in rationalizing electrical energy consumption. The most important characteristic of the proposed model is its simplicity as it does not change anything in the structure of the meter and does not need to make any modifications to its internal composition. This system will save a lot of effort and time and contribute to reducing human errors when reading metrics and making some kind of interventions between the supplier and the consumer to reduce waste, rationalize consumption and reduce costs.

Wireless charging systems (WCS) are becoming increasingly popular in the expanding EV market. This paper describes a wireless charging system for electric vehicles (EVs) that is powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels and employs inductively coupled power transfer topology. The receiver and transmitter components are separated by about 0.5 meter. As a result, as the receiver receives power to run the motor, the transfer is visible. Wireless power transmission technology makes use of a changing electromagnetic field. A steady current of charges creates a magnetic field around free space, which contains energy, and the electromagnetic field is generated between the coils and transmitted to the receiver. The system was modelled using Matlab/Simulink, and simulation was used to verify performance. Hardware prototype for the inductive coupling charging system has been developed and implemented.
