Effects of ambient-temperature curing agents on the thermal stability of poly(methylphenylsiloxane)

A silicone resin with silphenylene units in Si-O-Si backbones was synthesized by hydrolysis-polycondensation of 1,4-bis(hydroxydimethylsilyl)benzene (BHB) with chlorosilanes. The structure and property of this novel silicone resin were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogarvimetric analysis (TG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS). This silicone resin could be applied as the film forming material of coating when it is prepared under the condition of R/Si, Ph/R, and the content of silphenylene units being 1.3, 0.5, and 10 mol %, respectively. GPC, IR, and NMR results show that the silphenylene units have been incorporated into the polymer of silicone resin. The TG analysis indicates that this novel silicone resin has good heat resistance with the onset degradation temperature of 500.3°C and residual weight of 85.6% at 900°C. SEM results demonstrate that the silicone resin with silphenylene units can form full and uniform films, and its surface morphology of clear paints were not damaged by heat below 350°C. Synthesis and characterization of a silicone resin with silphenylene units in Si‐O‐Si backbones

Resistance of silicone resin to heat and irradiation was studied. The chemical structure of silicone resin before and after being heated and irradiated was analyzed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The thermal stability of silicone resin was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential thermogravimetry analysis (DTG), and its improvement was indicated by TG and DTG analyses of silicone resin after being irradiated by 60Co γ-ray under different fluence. The surface morphology, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance of silicone resin clear paints before and after being heated and irradiated were studied by SEM, EIS et al.

Evaluation of heat resistant properties of silicone based coatings by SEM and a.c. impedance techniques

Recent developments indicate that the polymer coatings used to protect steel structures from corrosive environments are rarely one‐component systems. Polymeric blends used to protect the structures are a mixture of at least two polymers or copolymers. The heterophase polymer blends are known as polymer‐polymer composites (PPC). The advantages of PPC coatings in comparison to multicoat systems are high thickness per coat, excellent protection and superior layer adhesion. Presents a study in which a poly (epoxy‐chlorinated rubber‐silicone) PPC coating was prepared and its chemical resistance properties in acid, alkali and neutral solutions were studied. Different combinations of these three binders were also prepared in toluene:acetone solvent mixture and the chemical resistance properties of these PPCs were evaluated in comparison with the corresponding multicoat system with the same thickness. Finds that the PPCs show superior properties when compared to multicoat systems. Studies the electrochemical behaviour such as potential, resistance and capacitance of the PPCs and the multicoat systems on steel substrate in sodium chloride solution and finds that the PPCs have higher resistance value than the multicoat systems. Based on the experimental results, concludes that a single coat of PPC can be recommended for protecting the steel structures from chemical and marine environments, instead of using conventional three‐ or four‐coat systems based on the same or different film formers.
