Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) enable new applications and require non-conventional paradigms for protocol design due to several constraints. Owing to the requirement for low device complexity together with low energy consumption (i.e., long network lifetime), a proper balance between communication and signal/data processing capabilities must be found. This motivates a huge effort in research activities, standardization process, and industrial investments on this field since the last decade. This survey paper aims at reporting an overview of WSNs technologies, main applications and standards, features in WSNs design, and evolutions. In particular, some peculiar applications, such as those based on environmental monitoring, are discussed and design strategies highlighted; a case study based on a real implementation is also reported. Trends and possible evolutions are traced. Emphasis is given to the IEEE 802.15.4 technology, which enables many applications of WSNs. Some example of performance characteristics of 802.15.4-based networks are shown and discussed as a function of the size of the WSN and the data type to be exchanged among nodes.

An Overview on Wireless Sensor Networks Technology and Evolution

Practical data compression in wireless sensor networks: A survey

Passive IR (PIR) sensors are excellent devices for wireless sensor networks (WSN), being low-cost, low-power, and presenting a small form factor. PIR sensors are widely used as a simple, but reliable, presence trigger for alarms, and automatic lighting systems. However, the output of a PIR sensor depends on several aspects beyond simple people presence, as, e.g., distance of the body from the sensor, direction of movement, and presence of multiple people. In this paper, we present a feature extraction and sensor fusion technique that exploits a set of wireless nodes equipped with PIR sensors to track people moving in a hallway. Our approach has reduced computational and memory requirements, thus it is well suited for digital systems with limited resources, such as those available in sensor nodes. Using the proposed techniques, we were able to achieve 100% correct detection of direction of movement and 83.49%-95.35% correct detection of distance intervals.

Tracking Motion Direction and Distance With Pyroelectric IR Sensors

Pyroelectric infrared (PIR) sensors are widely used as a presence trigger, but the analog output of PIR sensors depends on several other aspects, including the distance of the body from the PIR sensor, the direction and speed of movement, the body shape and gait. In this paper, we present an empirical study of human movement detection and identification using a set of PIR sensors. We have developed a data collection module having two pairs of PIR sensors orthogonally aligned and modified Fresnel lenses. We have placed three PIR-based modules in a hallway for monitoring people; one module on the ceiling; two modules on opposite walls facing each other. We have collected a data set from eight subjects when walking in three different conditions: two directions (back and forth), three distance intervals (close to one wall sensor, in the middle, close to the other wall sensor) and three speed levels (slow, moderate, fast). We have used two types of feature sets: a raw data set and a reduced feature set composed of amplitude and time to peaks; and passage duration extracted from each PIR sensor. We have performed classification analysis with well-known machine learning algorithms, including instance-based learning and support vector machine. Our findings show that with the raw data set captured from a single PIR sensor of each of the three modules, we could achieve more than 92% accuracy in classifying the direction and speed of movement, the distance interval and identifying subjects. We could also achieve more than 94% accuracy in classifying the direction, speed and distance and identifying subjects using the reduced feature set extracted from two pairs of PIR sensors of each of the three modules.

Human movement detection and identification using pyroelectric infrared sensors.

This paper presents a wireless distributed pyroelectric sensor system for tracking and identifying multiple humans based on their body heat radiation. This study aims to make pyroelectric sensors a low-cost alternative to infrared video sensors in thermal gait biometric applications. In this system, the sensor field of view (FOV) is specifically modulated with Fresnel lens arrays for functionality of tracking or identification, and the sensor deployment is chosen to facilitate the process of data-object-association. An Expectation-Maximization-Bayesian tracking scheme is proposed and implemented among slave, master, and host modules of a prototype system. Information fusion schemes are developed to improve the system identification performance for both individuals and multiple subjects. The fusion of thermal gait biometric information measured by multiple nodes is tested at four levels: sample, feature, score, and decision. Experimentally, the prototype system is able to simultaneously track two individuals in both follow-up and crossover scenarios with average tracking errors less than 0.5 m. The experimental results also demonstrate system's potential to be a reliable biometric system for the verification/identification of a small group of human subjects. The developed wireless distributed infrared sensor system can run as a standalone prisoner/patient monitoring system under any illumination conditions, as well as a complement for conventional video and audio human tracking and identification systems.

Multiple Human Tracking and Identification With Wireless Distributed Pyroelectric Sensor Systems

This paper presents a wireless pyroelectric sensor system, composed of sensing modules (slaves), a synchronization and error rejection module (master), and a data fusion module (host), to perform human tracking. The computation workload distribution among slave, master, and host is investigated. The performances and costs of different signal-processing and target-tracking algorithms are discussed. A prototype system is described containing pyroelectric sensor modules that are able to detect the angular displacement of a moving thermal target. Fresnel lens arrays are used to modulate the sensor field of view. The sensor system has been used to track a single human target
