A new class of sharp-rejection, low insertion-loss wide-band planar filters is presented in this letter. The proposed filter topology uses transversal signal-interference filtering sections made up of two transmission-line segments connected in parallel. Thus, under signal-interaction principles, the filtering action comes about through the generation of multiple out-of-band power transmission zeros and constructive in-passband signal combinations. Design equations and guidelines to adjust both the bandwidth and the out-of-band performance of the filtering response through the design parameters of the transversal section are also provided. Furthermore, the theoretical results are validated with the manufacture and characterization of an ultra-wideband microstrip filter prototype at 5 GHz.

Design of sharp-rejection and low-loss wide-band planar filters using signal-interference techniques

Over the past decade, extensive research work has been carried out to develop the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for radar applications, and to resolve the practical challenges in implementing an efficient UWB radar system. In this paper, we present an overview of the basic principles of UWB impulse radar. The focus is on the principles of UWB signal generation, impulse radiation, waveform design, pulse compression, range-velocity resolution (ambiguity function), array beamforming, and radar-target signature.

Ultra-wideband impulse radar-an overview of the principles

A systematic consistent and analytical method for the exact synthesis of ultra-wideband bandpass filtering responses using the isolated cascade connection of high- and low-pass sections is presented in this paper. Through the described synthesis technique, the optimum values for the design parameters of the high- and low-pass sections are computed from the initial specifications of the intended bandpass filtering profile. The theoretical results are validated with a synthesis example for both the Butterworth and Chebyshev cases. Furthermore, to prove the practical viability of the ultra-wideband filter topology based on high- and low-pass sections, a prototype at 4 GHz is designed, constructed in hybrid technology, and characterized. Systematic Method for the Exact Synthesis of Ultra-Wideband Filtering Responses Using High-Pass and Low-Pass Sections

A novel and compact ultra wideband (UWB) bandpass filter (BPF) with two transmission zeros near both passband edges of lower and higher frequency is proposed by using a new structure of fork-formresonators. The fork-formresonator generates a attenuation pole at the higher passband edge, lower insertion loss, wider bandwidth and compacter dimension, as compared with the traditional parallel unilateral-coupled resonator. A microstrip bandpass filter cascaded by two stages fork-formresonators with a 3-dB fractional bandwidth of 128% (from1.0 GHz to 4.6 GHz) is designed, fabricated, and tested. The measured characteristics of the filter agree with the theoretical simulations, and the measured results show good specifications which are very low insertion loss 0.5 ± 0.3 dB within the passband and good return loss less than −15 dB from1.5 GHz to 4.0 GHz, respectively.

A novel and compact uwb bandpass filter using microstrip fork-form resonators

An ultrawideband (UWB) radar can interfere with external RF sources because of the mutual occupancy of the same frequency band. A stepped-frequency polyphase code (SFPC) waveform is proposed as a generic UWB waveform whose interference with the external RF sources is significantly reduced. The subpulses of the individual stepped-frequency (SF) pulses are phase coded using small phase perturbations. This results in a waveform which places nulls at the frequency locations of the external RF sources. Because the phase perturbations are small, a mismatched filter which uses the unperturbed pulses (no phase modulation) as a reference signal results in a simple receiver design and a small mismatch loss on receive. Furthermore, the proposed methodology also has application to narrowband or wideband radars.
