Materials selection and design for development of sustainable products

The aim of this article is to present the main contributions of human resource management to develop sustainable organizations. The relationship between human resources and organizational sustainability, which is based on economical, social and environmental performance, involves some important aspects concerning management such as innovation, cultural diversity and the environment. The integration of items from the triple bottom line approach leads to developing a model based on a strategic and central posture of human resource management. Based on this model, propositions and recommendations for future research on this theme are presented.

Turning sustainability into action: Explaining firms' sustainability efforts and their impact on firm performance

Big data (BD) has attracted increasing attention from both academics and practitioners. This paper aims at illustrating the role of big data analytics in supporting world-class sustainable manufacturing (WCSM). Using an extensive literature review to identify different factors that enable the achievement of WCSM through BD and 405 usable responses from senior managers gathered through social networking sites (SNS), we propose a conceptual framework using constructs obtained using reduction of gathered data that summarizes this role; test this framework using data which is heterogeneous, diverse, voluminous, and possess high velocity; and highlight the importance for academia and practice. Finally, we conclude our research findings and further outlined future research directions.

The impact of big data on world-class sustainable manufacturing

As the next-generation manufacturing system, intelligent manufacturing enables better quality, higher productivity, lower cost, and increased manufacturing flexibility. The concept of sustainability is receiving increasing attention, and sustainable manufacturing is evolving. The digital twin is an emerging technology used in intelligent manufacturing that can grasp the state of intelligent manufacturing systems in real-time and predict system failures. Sustainable intelligent manufacturing based on a digital twin has advantages in practical applications. To fully understand the intelligent manufacturing that provides the digital twin, this study reviews both technologies and discusses the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing. Firstly, the relevant content of intelligent manufacturing, including intelligent manufacturing equipment, systems, and services, is analyzed. In addition, the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing is discussed. Subsequently, a digital twin and its application are introduced along with the development of intelligent manufacturing based on the digital twin technology. Finally, combined with the current status, the future development direction of intelligent manufacturing is presented.

Digital twin-based sustainable intelligent manufacturing: a review

Sustainability in the development and manufacture of new products is a strategy that is widely accepted in principle, although not yet widely practiced. The integration of environmental requirements throughout the entire lifetime of a product needs a new way of thinking and new decision tools to be applied. This paper describes the concept of an approach to product development, based on a paradigm for sustainable manufacturing. Four examples of methodologies and decision tools are discussed, representing the most important sources of environmental impacts of a product. The emphasis lies on the integrating concept rather than on the details of the methodologies.
