Considerable work has been performed on NiAl over the last three decades, with an extremely rapid growth in research on this intermetallic occurring in the last few years due to recent interest in this material for electronic and high temperature structural applications. However, many physical properties and the controlling fracture and deformation mechanisms over certain temperature regimes are still in question. Part of this problem lies in the incomplete characterization of many of the alloys previously investigated. Fragmentary data on processing conditions, chemistry, microstructure and the apparent difficulty in accurately measuring composition has made direct comparison between individual studies sometimes tenuous. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to summarize all available mechanical and pertinent physical properties on NiAl, stressing the most recent investigations, in an attempt to understand the behavior of NiAl and its alloys over a broad temperature range.

Physical and mechanical properties of the B2 compound NiAl

Irradiation of metals and alloys with neutrons, electrons, heavy ions, or γ-rays may introduce up to 108 J/mol of energy in the form of atomic displacements. This energy, which is in the form of vacancies, self-interstitials, and cores of displacement cascades is then available to produce a range of phase changes and microstructural alterations which are not observed under thermal conditions. There exist numerous mechanisms to convert part of this displacement energy into microstructural change, including irradiation-induced solute segregation, Frenkel pair recombination at the particle: matrix interface, irradiation disordering or amorphization, and recoil resolution of atoms from precipitates. In addition, the cores of displacement cascades may act as precipitate nucleation sites and Frenkel pair recombination may trigger spinodal-like instabilities. The theory of these mechanisms is developed in some detail, and is followed by a systematic review of experimentals observations of irradiation-altered phase stability. The observations include enhanced nucleation on displacement cascades, precipitation induced by solute segregation to defect sinks, nucleation of wrong phases, disordering and amorphization, Frenkel pair recombination driven precipitate, and inverse Ostwald ripening.

Phase Stability Under Irradiation

A thermodynamics-based description, in the form of an extended phase diagram, of melting and solid-state amorphization is proposed which brings out the parallels between these two phenomena and suggests that their underlying causes are apparently the same. Through molecular dynamics simulations we demonstrate that every crystal, in principle, can undergo two different types of melting transitions with characteristic features that are also observed in radiation- and hydrogenation-induced amorphization experiments on ordered alloys. The first type, defined in terms of free energies, is shown to involve the heterogeneous nucleation of the liquid or amorphous phase at extended lattice defects (such as grain boundaries, free surfaces, voids, or dislocations) and subsequent thermally-activated propagation of solid-liquid/amorphous interfaces through the crystal. The second type, arising from a mechanical instability limit described by Born, is homogeneous and does not require thermally-activated atom mobility. It is suggested that the role of chemical and structural disordering, a prerequisite for irradiation- but not hydrogenation-induced solid-state amorphization, is merely to drive the crystal lattice to a critical combination of volume and temperature at which the amorphous phase can form either heterogeneously or homogeneously.
