Effect of calcium based fertilization on dried fig (Ficus carica L. cv. Sarılop) yield and quality

Turkish dried fig (Ficus carica L.) production plays a major role in the world trade due to its volume and quality. The production is generally realized from orchards on steep slopes under rain-fed conditions. Birgi-Irimagzi in Odemis has peculiarities in respect to dried fig production. In this region, colluvial soils require additional late-winter irrigation by flooding especially in years because of inadequate winter rainfall. Organic dried fig production has gained importance since mid 1980s. The research work aimed at testing the effect of sheep and cow manure mixtures (at two different ratios: 1:1 and 2:1) on leaf and fruit nutrient contents, vigor, and fruit quality. The results proved that tree vigor and fruit quality were improved with the applied rates of farmyard manure, where as the effect on nutrient content of the leaf was not marked.

Effect of organic fertilization on fig leaf nutrients and fruit quality

Agroforestry species Leucaena leucocephala (subabul), a multipurpose leguminous tree, is one of the most suitable species for silvipasture system. Its seeds, a good protein source to livestock, also have lot of industrial application. Subabul responds well to pollarding, a practice that helps growth of understory crops but reduces seed yield of main tree species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutrient application on fruit and seed characters, seed yield, germination and vigour of pollarded subabul trees. The study was conducted on three important salvodar type subabul varieties (K8, K636 and S24) with different fruit and seed characters. Three nutrient mixtures (SSP @ 150 kg/ha + ZnSO4 @ 20 kg/ha; CuSO4 @ 0.25 % + Borax @ 0.15 % + KNO3 @ 1 % in 500 l spray volume per ha and KNO3 @ 4 kg/ha) were applied before anthesis. The nutrient treatments have enhanced fruit length and weight without affecting the fruit width. Similarly, seed characters responded positively to nutrient applications resulting in enhanced mean yield across varieties and years. The seed viability measured as germination percentage varied among varieties with maximum viability in small-seeded K 636. The application of nutrients enhanced the germination and vigour in all three varieties irrespective of the seed size. Among the nutrient mixtures, potassium nitrate @ 4 kg/ha has better effect on seed yield and its attributing characters as well as on seed quality across the varieties over the years.

Seed yield and quality enhancement of pollarded subabul ( Leucaena leucocephala) by nutrient supplementation

In this study, the effect of supplemental irrigation timing (treatments included no supplemental irrigation; supplemental irrigation in middle of March; supplemental irrigation in early May; supplemental irrigation in early August; and two supplemental irrigation events in middle of March and early May) and potassium (K) application (treatments included no-fertilizer; 150 and 250 g fertilizer per tree applied by fertigation method and no-fertilizer; 1.5 and 3.0 kg fertilizer per 1000 L water used by foliar application) on yield and yield quality of rain-fed fig trees were studied at the Estahban fig orchards in Fars province, Iran, through a three-year experiment. Results showed that supplemental irrigation for fig resulted in an increase in yield and fruit size, and improved the fruit peel color. However, it decreased total soluble solid of fruit. For one irrigation during the growing season, irrigation in late winter (March) with 1250 L of applied water per tree was better than irrigation in spring (May) with a similar amount applied water which was used as the supplemental irrigation of rain-fed fig trees under severe drought conditions. Two irrigation in March and May with 1500 L and 1250 L of applied water per tree for each event for the first year and two subsequent years, respectively, was more effective on the yield and fruit quality than single irrigation due to higher applied irrigation water. Using 150 g K per tree by fertigation method or 3.0 kg/1000L foliar K fertilizer resulted in significant effect on the yield and yield quality of fig and improved them.

Effect of supplemental irrigation timing and potassium fertilizer on rain-fed fig in micro-catchment: yield and yield quality

The research work is carried out to investigate the effects of foliar potassium and calcium nitrate applications on nutrient content and fruit quality of figs. The trial was performed as three replications on Sanlop trees, the main cultivar for commercial drying. The foliar fertilisation was made twice on July 10 and 25, 1997, and the program was carried out as potassium nitrate at 3.0 % level, calcium nitrate at 1.5 and 3.0 % levels and a combined application of 2.0 % potassium nitrate and 2.0 % calcium nitrate. The results put forth an increase of K and Ca contents of leaf lamina and petiole. Applications exerted marked effect on fruit width, length, shape and width of the ostiolar opening. Similar consequences appeared on texture and sugar fractions as fructose, α-glucose, β-glucose and galactose of dried fruits.
