Nitrification inhibitors in agriculture and horticulture: A literature review

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on nitrogen transformation processes in wetland rice soils. It summarizes information on the physical, physicochemical, and biochemical processes relevant to nitrogen transformations and to improving fertilizer nitrogen efficiency in wetland soils. Wetland soils differ markedly from well-drained dryland soils. The characteristics of the wetland rice soils have been studied and reported. Some dynamic aspects of the wetland rice soils that are pertinent to nitrogen transformations are summarized as retardation of gaseous exchange between flooded soil and atmosphere. In the wetland rice soil, a reduced plow layer is sandwiched between a thin oxidized surface soil layer and a partly oxidized subsurface soil layer. Within the reduced soil layer, in which most of rice roots proliferate and derive nitrogen, is a complex mosaic consisting of aerobic and anaerobic microsystems. Flooding soil results in the accumulation of ammonium, the instability of nitrate, and a lowered nitrogen requirement for organic matter decomposition. Flooding also causes inefficient utilization of applied nitrogen. Ammoniacal nitrogen is subject to fixation by clays, loss by volatilization, leaching, runoff, seepage, and nitrification followed by loss through denitrification.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses oxidation of sulfur (S) in soils. Soils throughout the world are increasingly recognized as being S deficient, and deficiencies in the element are even appearing in soils in countries where such deficiencies were previously unknown. These deficiencies result mainly from the use of high analysis, low S-containing fertilizers, reduction in the use of elemental S as a fungicide, and increasing effectiveness in SO 2 -pollution abatement programs. Reduced forms of S are often added to soils to overcome these deficiencies in plant-available S, on the assumption that microorganisms oxidize them to plant-available S0 4 2- . The process of S oxidation in soils is derived from laboratory studies, reflecting an almost total absence of field-based investigations. Despite the fact that fertilizer S is likely to be directed toward plant roots, there is a similar dearth of studies on the process occurring in crop plant rhizospheres, where heterotrophic S oxidizers are particularly active. The role of microorganisms in S oxidation in atmospheric S-polluted soils is largely overlooked, although it is clear that microbial oxidization of reduced S does occur in ecosystems that receive particulate deposits from pollution sources—such as, coking and smokeless fuel plants.

Summary
The paper reviews the recently published literature (mainly since 1970) on the effects of pesticides on the major biogeochemical cycles in soils, including transformations of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus sulphur, trace elements and soil enzymes.

The main conclusion is that pesticides, with the exception of fumigants and some broad spectrum fungicides, have little deleterious influence on soil processes when applied at field rates.

Obvious gaps in our knowledge of pesticide-soil interactions are pointed out and suggestions are made where future research is needed.

In the absence of effective biological control methods, the extensive use of pesticides in agriculture will continue. It is essential that the effects of these compounds on biochemical transformations in soils be determined, so that we can arrive at a balanced view of their effects on soil fertility.

Bereits im Jahre 1970 war das Fungizid Captan das in der Anwendung Dritthaufigste Pestizid in den U.S.A. Damit soll die zunehmende Bedeutung der Fungizide in der Pedosphare betont werden und eine zusammenfassende Abwagung der verschiedenen Wirkungsweisen dieser Pestizide (a) auf die Besiedlungsdichte an Bodenpilzen, (b) auf die einzelnen Pilzarten in Boden, (c) auf die bakterielle Gesamtflora (heterotrophe und autotrophe Organismen) und (d) auf die Actinomyceten rechtfertigen.



Die Applikation von Fungiziden bewirkt haufig eine vorubergehende Gleichgewichtsstorung der Mikroflora. Wohl am starksten reagieren die Pilze, einmal in einer starken Abnahme ihrer Gesamtdichte, zum anderen in einer Vermehrung bestimmter Gattungen (oft Trichoderma und Penicillium spp.). Unter den Bakterien sind es insbesondere die autotrophen Nitrifikanten (Nitrosomonas spp. und Nitrobacter spp.), welche empfindlich auf die Anwendung von Fungiziden reagieren. Die Hemmung der Nitrifikation macht sich vielfach in einer NH4-Akkumulation bemerkbar. Gelegentlich auch konnen geringe Applikationsraten die Nitrifikation fordern. Aber auch die phosphatauflosenden Bakterien scheinen positiv beeinflust zu werden, was sich in einer Zunahme der CaCl2-loslichen Bodenphosphate niederschlug. Aber auch andere Kationen wie K und Mg konnen nach einer Fungizidbehandlung (Benomyl) besser pflanzenverfugbar werden.



Fungizide konnen daruberhinaus die Zersetzungsrate von Streustoffen signifikant beeinflussen, einmal durch Verminderung der zellulolytischen Pilzflora, zum anderen durch Schwachung der Enzymaktivitaten beim Abbau von Chitin, Zuckern, organischen Phosphaten und Harnstoff.



Schlieslich scheinen Fungizide auch das Pflanzenwachstum zu fordern, und dies nicht nur durch Eliminierung von Pflanzenschadlingen. Demgegenuber steht die Beobachtung, daO die Rhizospharenflora so in Mitleidenschaft gezogen werden kann, daB die pathogenen Organismen in ihrem Invasionsvermogen gestarkt werden.



Die langfristige Wirkung von Fungiziden auf Boden und ihre Eigenschaften ist durchaus noch luckenhaft. Wenig bekannt ist auch uber die gunstige bzw. ungunstige Wechselwirkung von Fungiziden mit anderen Pestiziden in Boden. Der steigenden Pestizidanwendung im Rahmen der Nahrungsmittelversorgung mus kunftig ein verstarkter Informationsstrom uber die Wirkungsweise und Auswirkungen dieser chemischen Mittel gegenuberstehen. Eine Integration und Auswertung dieser Erfahrungen und Kenntnisse ist dam dringend erforderlich.
