Nations and Nationalism

This paper refers to the establishment of the Great Limpopo on the South Africa-Mozambique-Zimbabwe border and the Kgalagadi on the South Africa-Botswana border to illuminate the involvement of actors under conditions that cannot more appropriately be captured by analyses that place emphasis on particular scales. It reaffirms the view that the global-local infusion involves actors at multiple levels. To that end, the paper uses the debate about global-local connections as an interpretative framework for understanding various actors involved in the creation of transfrontier parks in southern Africa. Drawing from case study material in the Great Limpopo and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Parks, the paper shows that changing conservation philosophies, the socio-political environment, economic imperatives and conditions in and around national parks combined to make the region favourable to the new nature conservation schemes.

The question of how much progress has been made in any sphere of life calls for the interrogation of both the meanings and measurements of progress. This applies to discussions on ‘progress’ made by scientific disciplines. For a discipline such as geography, which stands at the confluence of philosophies of science, evaluating progress is a complex undertaking. Nevertheless, philosophies of progress could possibly highlight the ebbs and flows of the discipline. In this paper, I appropriate one of the many versions of the philosophies of progress to assess the achievements and shortcomings of South African geography over the last three decades. The paper concludes that, while the influence of mainstream geography cannot be discounted, local political environments have profound impact on the twists and turns of local geography.

The liberation of South Africa from the shackles of apartheid signifies the end of the last out-post of white domination in South Africa, and opened a new chapter on the search for a common South Africanism. The process of nation-building is haunted by relics of nationalist trends, one of which is Afrikaner nationalism. This article deals with certain aspects of Afrikaner nationalism which have continued into the post- apartheid era. It uses the division among Afrikaner nationalists to show the link between conservative Afrikaner nationalism, electioneering and the pursuit for a volkstaat (white homeland).
