Providing Quality of Service (QoS) to real time applications over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is becoming a very challenging task due to the diversity of multimedia applications. Concurrently, there are numerous WLANs devices that are rising recently. Mainly, we focus on IEEE 802.11n since it was designed to support a high data transmission rate (toward 600 Mbps) based on frame aggregation schemes. The aggregation mechanism accumulates many frames before transmitting them into a single larger frame, thus reducing overhead and increasing efficiency and throughput. Yet, this scheme cannot provide QoS satisfaction for delay sensitive application even if it supports higher throughputs. Indeed, aggregation headers cause supplementary delays particularly when aggregating unfrequent packets with small sizes. To overcome this limitation, we propose in this paper a new Dynamic Frame Aggregation (DFA) scheduler to provide QoS satisfaction to real time services. To achieve this goal, we defined new scheduling parameters such as QoS delays to avoid accumulation of non-scheduled packets. Hence, the DFA scheduler serves packets and dynamically adjusts the aggregated frame size based on these QoS delays. Conducted simulations illustrate the performance of our proposed DFA scheduler in term of satisfying QoS, throughput, loss and delay requirements of voice and video traffics.

SRA-MSDU: Enhanced A-MSDU frame aggregation with selective retransmission in 802.11n wireless networks

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for improving transmission efficiency of a wireless link. During operation, the system receives a packet for transmission, where in the packet includes an original sequence number. The system then modifies the packet by including a virtual sequence number in a header of the packet and including the original sequence number in a payload of the modified packet. The system further aggregates a number of modified packets into an aggregate frame and transmits the aggregate frame to a destination device. The virtual sequence number facilitates stateless transmission of the encapsulated packets and allows the aggregate frame to have a maximum allowable number of packets while accommodating both re-transmitted packets and regular packets.

Method and system for improving wireless link efficiency

The IEEE 802.11n standard promises to extend todays most popular WLAN standard by significantly increasing reach, reliability, and throughput. Ratified on september 2009, this standard defines many new physical and medium access control (MAC) layer enhancements. These enhancements aim to provide a data transmission rate of up to 600 Mbps. The frame aggregation mechanism of 802.11n MAC layer can improve the efficiency of channel utilization by reducing the protocol overheads. In this paper we investigate the effect of frame aggregation on the support of voice and video applications in wireless networks. We also propose a new frame aggregation scheduler that considers specific QoS requirements for multimedia applications. We dynamically adjust the aggregated frame size based on frame's access category defined in 802.11e standard.

A frame aggregation scheduler for QoS-sensitive applications in IEEE 802.11n WLANs

The IEEE 802.11n protocol, ratified on September 2009, promises both higher data rates up to 600 Mbit/s and further range. In this paper we investigate the effect of most of the proposed 802.11n MAC and physical layer enhancements on the adhoc networks performance. Experimental results in a real indoor wireless testbed demonstrated the effectiveness of 802.11n enhancement. The channel bonding feature has the most significant impact on the throughput. The aggregation mechanism is not always effective. Then, we propose a new frame aggregation scheduler that considers specific QoS requirements for multimedia applications.
