Aim: To determine the prevalence of, and reasons for, missed care by nurses and the factors associated with it in Iranian hospitals. Background: Despite providing high-quality patient care in hospitals, nurses often fail to deliver optimum care, which jeopardizes the safety of patients and increases health care costs. Therefore, identifying missed nursing care is essential if the quality of health services is to be improved. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 215 nurses working in the medicalâ��surgical wards of eight public and private hospitals in Tabriz, Iran. The â��MISSCAREâ�� survey tool was used to collect data in relation to the extent of missed care and the related reasons. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between factors and missed nursing care. Results: Results showed that the mean score of overall missed nursing care was 2.57 and 72.1 of the nurses reported that they missed at least one nursing care item on their last shift. â��Patient discharge planning and teachingâ��, â��emotional support to patient and/or familyâ�� and â��attend interdisciplinary care conferences whenever heldâ�� were the most common missed items by nurses in Iran. In a 5-point Likert scale, the most important reasons identified by nurses for missed care were â��human resourcesâ��, 3.11 (95 CI: 3.03â��3.19); â��material resourcesâ��, 2.7 (95 CI: 2.6â��2.8); and â��communicationâ��, 2.4 (95 CI: 2.3â��2.5), respectively. Missed nursing care was associated with sex (OR for malesÂ =Â 2.83, 95 CI: 1.01â��7.89), age (ORÂ =Â 1.16, 95 CI: 1.01â��1.33) and the number of patients under care (ORÂ =Â 1.11, 95 CI 1.01â��1.22). A reverse association was found with the number of patients discharged (ORÂ =Â 0.89, 95 CI: 0.82â��0.96) and satisfaction with teamwork (ORÂ =Â 0.60, 95 CI: 0.41â��0.89). Conclusions: There is a need to identify the factors contributing to the incidence of missed nursing care in hospitals and to develop strategies to address these. Implications for Nursing Management: The results of this study highlighted the importance of addressing missed nursing care in Iranian public and private hospitals. Nursing management should consider improving communication between team members and units. Changes are required regarding task division and payments to the nursing staff. Further research is required to understand the reasons behind missed nursing care, and the development of appropriate policies to address better nursing care in hospitals is recommended. Introduction. Nurses working in the intensive care unit play an essential role in detecting patients at risk of deterioration through ongoing assessment and action in response to changing health status. Objectives. To assess knowledge, attitude, and associated factors towards physical assessment on critically ill patients among nurses working in the intensive care unit at Amhara regional state referral hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019. The research hypothesis: there is poor physical assessment knowledge, poor physical assessment attitude, and there are factors that are likely to affect nurses’ knowledge and attitude towards physical assessment providing this care to critically ill patients at Amhara regional state referral hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019. Methods. Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 299 nurses from March to September 2019. A convenience sampling method was used. Data were entered by using Epi Info 7.2.2 and analyzed by using STATA 14. The result was computed by descriptive statistics and to explore predictors of knowledge, and attitude linear regression analysis models were fitted, and the adjusted unstandardized beta (β) coefficient at 95% CI was used. A - value <0.05 was considered significant. Result and conclusion: the knowledge mean scores were 9.93 ± 2.99 [95% CI (9.59, 10.31)]. The proportion of nurse’s knowledge who score above the mean was 167 (55.9%) [95% CI (50.2, 61.5)] and below the mean 132 (44.1%) [95% CI (38.5, 49.8)]. Attitude means scores were 36.85 ± 6.21 [(36.16, 37.51)]. The proportions of nurse’s attitudes who score above the mean were 158 (52.8%) [95% CI (47.5, 58.5)] and below the mean 141 (47.2) [95% CI (41.5, 52.5)]. Regarding predictor variables, being male [β = 0.84, 95% CI (0.16, 1.52)] and taken training [β = 1.85, 95% CI (1.14, 2.56)] were factors positively associated with knowledge, whereas has taken training [β = 4.13, 95% CI (2.82, 5.44)], total years of experience [β = 0.59, 95% CI (0.25, 0.93)], and knowledge [β = 0.92, 95% CI (0.0.72, 1.12)] were factors positively associated with attitude towards physical assessment. Conclusion. Based on the result of this study, the knowledge and attitude towards physical assessment regarding critically ill patients among nurses working in intensive care units were good. Hence, training, educational support services, and awareness are recommended to encourage nurse’s knowledge and attitude towards physical assessment.

Comparison of the Conceptual Map and Traditional Lecture Methods on Students' Learning Based on the VARK Learning Style Model: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Introduction: In-service training of nurses plays an indispensablerole in improving the quality of inpatient care. Need to enhancethe effectiveness of in-service training of nurses is an inevitablerequirement. This study attempted to design a new optimal modelfor in-service training of nurses.Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in two stagesduring 2015-2016. In the first stage, the Grounded Theory wasadopted to explore the process of training 35 participating nurses.The sampling was initially purposeful and then theoretically basedon emerging concept. Data were collected through interview,observation and field notes. Moreover, the data were analyzedthrough Corbin-Strauss method and the data were coded throughMAXQDA-10. In the second stage, the findings were employedthrough Walker and Avant’s strategy for theory construction so asto design an optimal model for in-service training of nursing staff.Results: In the first stage, there were five major themes includingunsuccessful mandatory education, empowering education,organizational challenges of education, poor educationalmanagement, and educational-occupational resiliency.Empowering education was the core variable derived from theresearch, based on which a grounded theory was proposed. Thenew empowering education model was composed of self-directedlearning and practical learning. There are several strategiesto achieve empowering education, including the fostering ofsearching skills, clinical performance monitoring, motivationalfactors, participation in the design and implementation, andproblem-solving approach.Conclusion: Empowering education is a new model for in-servicetraining of nurses, which matches the training programs withandragogical needs and desirability of learning among the staff.Owing to its practical nature, the empowering education canfacilitate occupational tasks and achieving greater mastery ofprofessional skills among the nurses.Keywords: Grounded theory; Model; Nurse; Training
