The Object Management Group's (OMG) Model Driven Architecture (MDA) strategy envisages a world where models play a more direct role in software production, being amenable to manipulation and transformation by machine. Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is wider in scope than MDA. MDE combines process and analysis with architecture. This article sets out a framework for model driven engineering, which can be used as a point of reference for activity in this area. It proposes an organisation of the modelling 'space' and how to locate models in that space. It discusses different kinds of mappings between models. It explains why process and architecture are tightly connected. It discusses the importance and nature of tools. It identifies the need for defining families of languages and transformations, and for developing techniques for generating/configuring tools from such definitions. It concludes with a call to align metamodelling with formal language engineering techniques.

Increasingly complex and rapidly changing requirements and technologies are making application development increasingly difficult. This talk examines this phenomenon, and presents a simple pattern for building languages, patterns, frameworks and tools for specific domains, such as user interface construction or database design. Software Factories integrate critical innovations in adaptive assembly, software product lines, and model driven development to reduce the cost of implementing this pattern, making it cost effective for narrower and more specialized domains, such as B2B commerce and employee self service portals.

Performance problems pose a significant risk to software vendors. If left undetected, they can lead to lost customers, increased operational costs, and damaged reputation. Despite all efforts, software engineers cannot fully prevent performance problems being introduced into an application. Detecting and resolving such problems as early as possible with minimal effort is still an open challenge in software performance engineering. In this paper, we present a novel approach for Performance Problem Diagnostics (PPD) that systematically searches for well-known performance problems (also called performance antipatterns) within an application. PPD automatically isolates the problem's root cause, hence facilitating problem solving. We applied PPD to a well established transactional web e-Commerce benchmark (TPC-W) in two deployment scenarios. PPD automatically identified four performance problems in the benchmark implementation and its deployment environment. By fixing the problems, we increased the maximum throughput of the benchmark from 1800 requests per second to more than 3500.

Supporting Swift Reaction: Automatically Uncovering Performance Problems by Systematic Experiments.

Domain-specific languages (DSL) are programming or modeling languages devoted to a given application domain. There are many tools used to support the implementation of a DSL, making hard the decision-making process for one or another. In this sense, identifying and mapping their features is relevant for decision-making by academic and industrial initiative on DSL development. Objective: The goal of this work is to identify and map the tools, Language Workbenches (LW), or frameworks that were proposed to develop DSLs discussed and referenced in publications between 2012 and 2019. Method: A Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) of the literature scoping tools for DSL development. Results: We identified 59 tools, including 9 under a commercial license and 41 with non-commercial licenses, and analyzed their features from 230 papers. Conclusion: There is a substantial amount of tools that cover a large number of features. Furthermore, we observed that usually, the developer adopts one type of notation to implement the DSL: textual or graphical. We also discuss research gaps, such as a lack of tools that allow meta-meta model transformations and that support modeling tools interoperability.

Systematic mapping study on domain-specific language development tools

Every year several contributions to the model-based testing (MBT) field are published. Therefore, to follow the evolution and trends of several tools and models available is difficult. Moreover, since the variety of models and tools that became available in recent years, choosing an approach to support the MBT process is a challenging activity. The main objective of this study is to provide an overview on MBT tools and models used by those tools. Furthermore, the authors' study can help academic researchers and companies to understand the topics involving MBT. Therefore, a systematic mapping study was conducted in which 1197 distinct papers were evaluated. At the end, 87 primary studies were selected to be analysed in a quantitative and qualitative way. As a result, they classified the tools and models that are currently used to support MBT. Moreover, they identified 70 MBT tools, as well as different domains in which MBT is already applied to. Therefore, there are some evidence that MBT continues to be a broad and ‘alive’ research field since every year a significant number of papers presenting different kinds of contributions are published.

Systematic mapping study on MBT: tools and models

Software quality is a constant concern for software engineers. Hence, they are increasingly taking advantage of new methods to evaluate their products quality. For instance, the evaluation of languages developed for specific domains, which in the literature are known as Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs), is a growing concern. DSLs are languages used by different developers to solve problems of specific domains. Regarding the evaluation of these languages, several experimental studies that subjectively evaluate usability can be found in the literature, but few of them have taken advantage of applying Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) techniques. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to present a usability evaluation framework for DSLs, called Usa-DSL. In order to produce a first evaluation of the framework, we use a Focus Group method, in which seven subjects met to discuss our proposed framework. This discussion resulted in modifications of our initial proposal, which were incorporated in the final framework presented in this paper.

Usa-DSL: usability evaluation framework for domain-specific languages

Background: The knowledge and application of tools to automate testing is essential to ensure software reliability and therefore its quality. Due to the increasing demand for quality in software projects executed in short time-scales, Testing as a Service (TaaS) appeared in the literature as contributions for cost reduction and productivity of automated tests. Aims: Once quality attributes from these contributions are not deeply discussed by the literature of the area, our goal is to investigate and identify these attributes from the TaaS platforms and providers commonly reported in the literature. Method: A protocol was formulated and executed according to the guidelines for performing systematic literature map in Software Engineering. Results: The TaaS providers and platform proposals found were classified according to the number of mentions in the literature, highlighting the most commonly mentioned and widespread. As well as the propagation and explanation of the main advantages and disadvantages reported in the literature on Testing as a Service. Conclusions: TaaS provides means for cost reduction and increase in productivity in comparison to traditional test approaches. This is a reality observed in 76 options for Test as a Service cloud platforms distributed over 52 papers. In addition, as their quality attributes, we also found eight groups of disadvantages and 21 of advantages. Thus, this systematic mapping is a valuable contribution for decision making on performance testing strategies.

Testing as a service (TaaS): a systematic literature map

Performance is a fundamental quality of software systems. The focus of performance testing is to reveal bottlenecks or lack of scalability of a system or an environment. However, usually the software development cycle does not include this effort on the early development phases, which leads to a weak elicitation process of performance requirements. One way to mitigate that is to include performance requirements in the system models. This can be achieved by using Model-Based Testing (MBT) since it enables to aggregate testing information in the system model since the early stages of the software development cycle. This also allows to automate the generation of test artifacts, such as test cases or test scripts, and improves communication among different teams. In this paper, we present a set of requirements for developing a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) for modeling performance testing of Web applications. In addition, we present our design decisions in creating a solution that meets the specific needs of a partner company. We believe that these decisions help in building a body of knowledge that can be reused in different settings that share similar requirements. Keywords—performance testing; domain-specific language.
