Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical significance of severe isolated diaphragm weakness.
TL;DR: It is concluded that bilateral paralysis or very severe weakness of the diaphragm does not of itself lead to respiratory failure unless weakness of other respiratory muscles is present.
Journal ArticleDOI
Air pollution and health.
TL;DR: The haze of photochemical smog that collects over cities has been seen by most people during hot summer spells, and in Britain last week the environment minister asked motorists to leave their cars at home, is this wise advice or overreaction?
Journal ArticleDOI
Portable measurement of maximum mouth pressures.
TL;DR: The mouth pressure meter reliably and accurately measured peak pressure and maximal pressure both for inspiratory and expiratory efforts in normals and patients and should be useful to measure mouth pressures, not only in the routine lung function laboratory but also at the bedside and in the clinic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diaphragm Strength In Chronic Heart Failure
Philip D. Hughes,Michael I. Polkey,M. Lou Harris,Andrew J.S. Coats,John Moxham,Malcolm Green +5 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that mild reduction in diaphragm strength occurs in CHF, possibly because of an increased proportion of slow fibers, but overall strength of the respiratory muscles remains well preserved.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recurrent nocturnal asthma after exposure to grain dust.
TL;DR: Bronchial provocation tests performed on two seperate occasions in a farmer with dust from his own grain led to immediate and late respiratory reactions followed, without further exposure to grain dust, by severe respiratory reactions during subsequent nights.
