All one needs to know about fog computing and related edge computing paradigms: A complete survey

With the Internet of Things (IoT) becoming part of our daily life and our environment, we expect rapid growth in the number of connected devices. IoT is expected to connect billions of devices and humans to bring promising advantages for us. With this growth, fog computing, along with its related edge computing paradigms, such as multi-access edge computing (MEC) and cloudlet, are seen as promising solutions for handling the large volume of security-critical and time-sensitive data that is being produced by the IoT. In this paper, we first provide a tutorial on fog computing and its related computing paradigms, including their similarities and differences. Next, we provide a taxonomy of research topics in fog computing, and through a comprehensive survey, we summarize and categorize the efforts on fog computing and its related computing paradigms. Finally, we provide challenges and future directions for research in fog computing.

Smart cities contain intelligent things which can intelligently automatically and collaboratively enhance life quality, save people's lives, and act a sustainable resource ecosystem. To achieve these advanced collaborative technologies such as drones, robotics, artificial intelligence, and Internet of Things (IoT) are required to increase the smartness of smart cities by improving the connectivity, energy efficiency, and quality of services (QoS). Therefore, collaborative drones and IoT play a vital role in supporting a lot of smart-city applications such as those involved in communication, transportation, agriculture,safety and security, disaster mitigation, environmental protection, service delivery, energy saving, e-waste reduction, weather monitoring, healthcare, etc. This paper presents a survey of the potential techniques and applications of collaborative drones and IoT which have recently been proposed in order to increase the smartness of smart cities. It provides a comprehensive overview highlighting the recent and ongoing research on collaborative drone and IoT in improving the real-time application of smart cities. This survey is different from previous ones in term of breadth, scope, and focus. In particular, we focus on the new concept of collaborative drones and IoT for improving smart-city applications. This survey attempts to show how collaborative drones and IoT improve the smartness of smart cities based on data collection, privacy and security, public safety, disaster management, energy consumption and quality of life in smart cities. It mainly focuses on the measurement of the smartness of smart cities, i.e., environmental aspects, life quality, public safety, and disaster management.

Survey on Collaborative Smart Drones and Internet of Things for Improving Smartness of Smart Cities

In mobile edge computing, edge servers are geographically distributed around base stations placed near end-users to provide highly accessible and efficient computing capacities and services. In the mobile edge computing environment, a service provider can deploy its service on hired edge servers to reduce end-to-end service delays experienced by its end-users allocated to those edge servers. An optimal deployment must maximize the number of allocated end-users and minimize the number of hired edge servers while ensuring the required quality of service for end-users. In this paper, we model the edge user allocation (EUA) problem as a bin packing problem, and introduce a novel, optimal approach to solving the EUA problem based on the Lexicographic Goal Programming technique. We have conducted three series of experiments to evaluate the proposed approach against two representative baseline approaches. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms the other two approaches.

Optimal Edge User Allocation in Edge Computing with Variable Sized Vector Bin Packing

Unmanned aerial vehicles applications in future smart cities

In this article, the authors dissect the technical challenges that cities face when implementing smart city plans and outlines the design principles and lessons learned after they carried out a flagship initiative on fog computing in Barcelona. In particular, they analyze what they call the Quadruple Silo (QS) problem -- that is, four categories of silos that cities confront after deploying commercially available solutions. Those silo categories are: physical (hardware) silos, data silos, and service management silos, and the implications of the three silos in administrative silos. The authors show how their converged cloud/fog paradigm not only helps solve the QS problem, but also meets the requirements of a growing number of decentralized services -- an area in which traditional cloud models fall short. The article exposes cases in which fog computing is a must, and shows that the reasons for deploying fog are centered much more on operational requirements than on performance issues related to the cloud.
