TL;DR: Perkin-Elmer as mentioned in this paper proposed a lock-on arrangement for magnetic resonance spectrometers with homogenizing coils for increasing the uniformity of the polarizing field in the region of the sample to be analyzed.
Abstract: 1,197,852. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers. PERKIN-ELMER CORP. Jan.15, 1968 [Jan.30, 1967], No.2087/68. Heading G1N. In an N.M.R. spectrometer having homogenizing coils for increasing the uniformity of the polarizing field in the region of the sample to be analyzed, and a lock-on arrangement including a reference sample for detecting and compensating for variations in the field over a period of time, further coils are provided for homogenizing the field in the region of the reference sample. These further coils are cemented to an insulating sphere 42 through which the reference sample tube 38, surrounded by r.f. coil 40, extends. In one arrangement, three coils are arranged on the loci on the sphere where the zonal (2z 2 - x 2 - y 2 ), first tesseral (x.y), and second tesseral (y.z) spherical harmonic functions vanish Figs.4, 5 and 6 respectively, (not shown). The magnitude and direction of the current in each coil is independently adjustable. In a second arrangement, Fig.7 (not shown), three zonal coils are arranged symmetrically about the Z axis, the direction of the polarizing field, being spaced therefrom by an angle # and mutually spaced by an angle #. Approximate values of # and # are given.
