Light is often thought of in terms of radial polarization, but longitudinal polarization is also possible, and it has some intriguing possibilities for particle acceleration. Binary optics, combined with a high-numerical-aperture lens, is a potential route to achieving light with this unusual property.

Theoretical analysis suggests that there exists an optical attractive force capable of “pulling” microparticles towards a light source. This backwards force is generated by using interference to optimize the scattering of light in the forwards direction.

Self-reconstruction of a distorted nondiffracting beam

An annular pupil, which can be used to produce a Bessel beam, when combined with radially polarized illumination promises improvements in microscope resolution, increased packing density for optical storage, and finer optical lithography. When combined with a circular detection pupil in confocal microscopy a point-spread function 112 nm wide results (lambda = 488 nm). Radially polarized annular illumination of a solid-immersion lens can yield a focal spot smaller than 100 nm for lambda = 488 nm. Use of radially polarized illumination with pupil masks is discussed.

Annular Pupils, Radial Polarization, and Superresolution

Vector beams, and in particular vector vortex beams, have found many applications in recent times, both as classical fields and as quantum states. While much attention has focused on the creation and detection of scalar optical fields, it is only recently that vector beams have found their place in the modern laboratory. In this review, we outline the fundamental concepts of vector beams, summarise the various approaches to control them in the laboratory, and give a concise overview of the many applications they have spurned.

A review of complex vector light fields and their applications

The non-diffractive vector Bessel beams of an arbitrary order are examined as both the solution to the vector Helmholtz wave equation and the superposition of vector components of the angular spectrum. The transverse and longitudinal intensity components of the vector Bessel beams are analysed for the radial, azimuthal, circular and linear polarizations. The radially and azimuthally polarized beams are assumed to be formed by the axicon polarizers used with the initially unpolarized or linearly polarized light. Conditions in which the linearly polarized Bessel beams can be approximated by the scalar solutions to the wave equation are also discussed.
