We introduce flat systems, which are equivalent to linear ones via a special type of feedback called endogenous. Their physical properties are subsumed by a linearizing output and they might be regarded as providing another nonlinear extension of Kalman's controllability. The distance to flatness is measured by a non-negative integer, the defect. We utilize differential algebra where flatness- and defect are best defined without distinguishing between input, state, output and other variables. Many realistic classes of examples are flat. We treat two popular ones: the crane and the car with n trailers, the motion planning of which is obtained via elementary properties of plane curves. The three non-flat examples, the simple, double and variable length pendulums, are borrowed from non-linear physics. A high frequency control strategy is proposed such that the averaged systems become flat.

The problem of controlling a fixed nonlinear plant in order to have its output track (or reject) a family of reference (or disturbance) signal produced by some external generator is discussed. It is shown that, under standard assumptions, this problem is solvable if and only if a certain nonlinear partial differential equation is solvable. Once a solution of this equation is available, a feedback law which solves the problem can easily be constructed. Output regulation of nonlinear systems

Model Predictive Control (MPC), the dominant advanced control approach in industry over the past twenty-five years, is presented comprehensively in this unique book. Analysis of Cognitive Radio Dynamics

A hybrid controller is proposed for Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) processes. Since the process is described by a set of Partial Differential Algebraic Equations (PDAE's), first a Local Reduced Order Model (LROM) for the process is developed and then it is formalized as a hybrid system. A controller is designed for purity control of the process in the presence of external disturbances, by determining the maximal safe set of the LROM. Hybrid backward reachability analysis is performed for this purpose. The controller is designed and applied to a two-bed, six-step PSA process whose dynamical behavior is simulated by a full-order principle-based model of the process. Excellent performance of the controller is obtained.

In Air Traffic Management (ATM) systems, catastrophic events are often caused by errors made by agents operating in the procedures. Detecting safety critical situations that may arise in the evolution of ATM systems is of primary importance in the analysis of their behavior. The inherent complexity of ATM systems, typically involving a large number of agents, makes this analysis prohibitive today. Compositionality has been an effective way of tackling this problem. We present a compositional hybrid systems framework to accurately describe the behavior of the agents operating in ATM scenarios and of their interaction. We then expose some results that reduce the computational effort required in detecting safety critical situations. Benefits from the use of this complexity reduction approach are illustrated using the analysis of the Airborne Separation-In Trail Procedure (ASEP-ITP).

Towards a Unified Theory for the Control of CPS: A Symbolic Approach.

Discrete abstractions of continuous and hybrid systems have recently been the topic of great interest from both the control systems and the computer science communities, because they provide a sound mathematical framework for analysing and controlling embedded systems. In this paper we give a further contribution to this research line, by addressing the problem of symbolic control design of nonlinear systems with infinite states specifications, modelled by differential equations. We first derive the symbolic controller solving the control design problem, given in terms of discrete abstractions of the plant and the specification systems. We then present an algorithm which integrates the construction of the discrete abstractions with the design of the symbolic controller. Space and time complexity analysis of the proposed algorithm is performed and a comparison with traditional approaches currently available in the literature for symbolic control design, is discussed. Some examples are included, which show the interest and applicability of our results.
