VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) models are seen as an important tool in the AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry. The VDC methods allow stakeholders to integrate and transmit information throughout the project life cycle, in order to meet customer requirements. Furthermore, VDC is seen as a new approach that will help the AEC industry in achieving Lean principles by eliminating waste, reducing costs, improving productivity and creating positive results within the projects. The Lean philosophy can be used as a conceptual framework for the implementation of VDC, because the impacts of VDC can be associated directly with Lean Principles. Despite the importance of VDC, its implementation is based on anecdotes and beliefs from past projects making it difficult for the industry professionals to formalize implementation lines (factors and metrics) and apply them throughout the project. This research aims to analyze the current implementation of VDC from a Lean perspective. Our analysis includes studies – in the form of surveys, interviews, case studies, literature reviews and implementation guides– that have been conducted in order to assess the implementation and impact of VDC in the AEC industry. The results highlight the importance of the VDC implementation (benefits and obstacles), the lack of tools to identify strategies for successful implementation and the connection between VDC and the lean philosophy.

Analysis of the Implementation of VDC from a Lean Perspective: Literature Review

ABSTRACT Sustainable heritage tourism is recognized as an economic activity that can ensure the careful management of tangible cultural heritage sites for future generations, and attract visitors to experience their cultural, historical, and archaeological significance. The use of 3D immersive cultural heritage visualization presentations can enhance a visitor’s perceived experience and motivation, and have received growing interest in the tourism literature. However, the impact of these cultural heritage presentations on visitor perceived experience with regard to certain psychological and social factors has not been fully explored. This study aims to fill this gap in the literature by investigating how 3D immersive visualization experiences enhance the significance and value of tangible cultural heritage sites, through considering significant factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted with visitors who experienced a 3D reconstructed immersive visual experience of the Seokguram Grotto World Heritage Site. The results showed that the 3D reconstructed immersive visualization contents increased the significance and value of the tangible cultural heritage site, by influencing visitors' perceived experiences using certain psychological factors. These findings will contribute positively to the sustainable heritage tourism development literature.

How do visitors perceive the significance of tangible cultural heritage through a 3D reconstructed immersive visual experience at the Seokguram Grotto, South Korea?

The creation of cultural and tourism routes and itineraries are important resources, which allow the enhancement and dynamization of destinations, particularly from an economic perspective, by increasing tourism demand. As such, it is a differentiating and unique product, offered to visitors and tourists, and that has observed a considerable demand. Although the dimension of religious and cultural tourism is widely studied by several authors, the tourist and cultural routes and itineraries to boost and enhance the historical and cultural heritage are not sufficiently studied, so the aim of this paper is to extend the scientific knowledge on this topic. The general objective of this research is to evaluate the role of Portugal’s historical and cultural heritage in the context of the creation of the monasteries route, focusing on Northern Portugal. The method applied in this research was the qualitative methodology, with data being collected through semi-structured interviews. Ten interviews were applied to the representatives of several entities. According to the exhaustive and detailed analysis of the information and data provided, it can be proven that UNESCO’s attribution of the World Heritage designation to destinations and sites gives them greater recognition and an exponential increase in tourists; the historical and cultural heritage is one of the main factors for the choice of a destination; the historical and cultural heritage is positively leveraged by public and governmental entities; the role of pilgrimages positively influences the increase of the tourism sector in Portugal bringing several advantages mainly in the hotel and restaurant sector; the creation of a tourism and cultural itinerary fosters knowledge, the preservation of the historical and cultural legacy and, finally, repercussions in the economy of Portugal; convents and monasteries are one of the dimensions that are targeted by national policies of preservation of the historical and cultural heritage. 

Enhancing Historical Heritage and Religious Tourism in the North of Portugal: The Monasteries Route

We would like to propose a plan to apply historic building information modeling (HBIM) for XR heritage tourism. It is significant that the XR heritage tourism content expresses not only a visually detailed image but also the value of heritage and its historical information together to convey the authenticity of the heritage to end-users. Such historical information has been managed in integrated forms using the HBIM methodology, but there is a few researches on the methodology using it as XR content. Therefore, we define the detailed stages of the level of historical information and propose an HBIM system to apply them to XR heritage tourism. Since HBIM has the following characteristics, it can contribute to building an XR heritage content. First, it can be used to visualize the complexity of built heritage in an XR environment. Second, HBIM-based XR tourism content contains contextual information of cultural heritage, which can provide authentic information that tourists want to obtain while visiting the heritage sites. Third, it helps to understand heritage by providing integrated heritage information. Fourth, continuous XR tourism is possible through the management of user-generated content and user information generated in experiencing heritage. This paper will contribute to delivering the value of cultural heritage to end-users through XR heritage tourism content. 

A Study on the Application of Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) for XR Cultural Heritage Tourism

PurposeBuilding information modeling (BIM) is a striking development in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, which provides in-depth information on different stages of the building lifecycle. Real estate valuation, as a fully interconnected field with the AEC industry, can benefit from 3D technical achievements in BIM technologies. Some studies have attempted to use BIM for real estate valuation procedures. However, there is still a limited understanding of appropriate mechanisms to utilize BIM for valuation purposes and the consequent impact that BIM can have on decreasing the existing uncertainties in the valuation methods. Therefore, the paper aims to analyze the literature on BIM for real estate valuation practices.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents a systematic review to analyze existing utilizations of BIM for real estate valuation practices, discovers the challenges, limitations and gaps of the current applications and presents potential domains for future investigations. Research was conducted on the Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar databases to find relevant references that could contribute to the study. A total of 52 publications including journal papers, conference papers and proceedings, book chapters and PhD and master's theses were identified and thoroughly reviewed. There was no limitation on the starting date of research, but the end date was May 2022.FindingsFour domains of application have been identified: (1) developing machine learning-based valuation models using the variables that could directly be captured through BIM and industry foundation classes (IFC) data instances of building objects and their attributes; (2) evaluating the capacity of 3D factors extractable from BIM and 3D GIS in increasing the accuracy of existing valuation models; (3) employing BIM for accurate estimation of components of cost approach-based valuation practices; and (4) extraction of useful visual features for real estate valuation from BIM representations instead of 2D images through deep learning and computer vision.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to research efforts on utilization of 3D modeling in real estate valuation practices. In this regard, this paper presents a broad overview of the current applications of BIM for valuation procedures and provides potential ways forward for future investigations.
