Plant Allelochemicals and Their Various Applications

Microalgae contain valuable compounds that can be harnessed for industrial applications. Lignocellulose biomass is a plant material containing in abundance organic substances such as carbohydrates, phenolics, organic acids and other secondary compounds. As growth of microalgae on organic substances was confirmed during heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation, lignocellulose derived compounds can become a feedstock to cultivate microalgae and produce target compounds. In this review, different treatment methods to hydrolyse lignocellulose into organic substrates are presented first. Secondly, the effect of lignocellulosic hydrolysates, organic substances typically present in lignocellulosic hydrolysates, as well as minor co-products, on growth and accumulation of target compounds in microalgae cultures is described. Finally, the possibilities of using lignocellulose hydrolysates as a common feedstock for microalgae cultures are evaluated.

Effect of Lignocellulose Related Compounds on Microalgae Growth and Product Biosynthesis: A Review

The two alkaloids gramine and hordenine have been known for playing a role in the allelopathic ability in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). These allelochemicals can be both found in leaves and roots in some barley cultivars whereas in others one seems to exclude the other. In this study eighteen accessions of barley from the Middle-East area, one accession from Tibet and the modern spring cultivar Barke, already used as parental donor in a nested associated mapping (NAM) population, were screened for their gramine, hordenine and N-methyltyramine (the direct precursor of hordenine) content in leaves, roots and exudates. Moreover, the toxicity of the three allelochemicals on root growth inhibition on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was evaluated. Results of this study showed the preferential production of gramine and hordenine in leaves and roots, respectively, in the nineteen barley accessions. On the other hand, in the modern barley cultivar Barke, the highest content of hordenine in roots and the general lack of gramine suggests a favored biosynthesis of the former. Gramine was not detected in the root exudates. In additions, different metabolomic profiles were observed in wild relatives compared to modern barley genotypes. The results also showed the phytotoxic effects of the three compounds on root growth of lettuce seedlings, with a reduction in root length and an increase of root surface area and diameter. In conclusion, this study highlighted the impact of the domestication effects on the production and distribution of the two allelopathic alkaloids gramine and hordenine in barley.

New insights in the allelopathic traits of different barley genotypes: Middle Eastern and Tibetan wild-relative accessions vs. cultivated modern barley.

Thirty-seven commercial aldehydes containing aliphatic chains and aromatic rings as well as heteroaromatic rings were evaluated for their inhibitory activities against Chinese amaranth (Amaranthus tricolor L.) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv). Polysorbate 80 (Tween® 80) was used as a surfactant and the research was preliminarily conducted at 400 μM of all aldehydes. Among these aldehydes, (E)-cinnamaldehyde (7) showed the greatest inhibitory effect on seed germination, shoot and root growth of Chinese amaranth by 54.55%, 75.53%, and 85.13% respectively. Similarly, (E)-crotonaldehyde (5), a related α,β-unsaturated aldehyde, inhibited the germination and seedling growth of the tested species at a high percentage. Apart from these two unsaturated aldehydes, no other aliphatic aldehydes had a harmful effect on Chinese amaranth. In terms of benzaldehyde (6), it had no effect on the tested plant; however, many of its derivatives displayed some inhibitory activity. Furthermore, for the ten common heteroaromatic aldehydes, picolinaldehyde (32) had a high inhibitory effect on Chinese amaranth which closely related to the effect of (E)-crotonaldehyde (5) and (E)-cinnamaldehyde (7), whereas, other heteroaromatic aldehydes showed lower effects. In the case of a monocot plant, barnyardgrass, no tested aldehydes reduced seed germination, however, (E)-cinnamaldehyde (7), 2,4,6-trimethoxybenzaldehyde (16) and 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde (24) could inhibit the seedling growth of the plant with low to moderate levels. The herbicidal effects of the most active aldehydes were then further investigated in order to find the minimum concentration of these aldehydes suppressing the germination and growth of the tested plants. At concentrations as low as 50-100 μM some aldehydes could inhibit the seedling growth of the tested species. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) study reported here demonstrates the chemical clues governing the inhibitory activity of aldehydes which could be utilized in the development of highly effective herbicides in the near future.

Phytotoxicity of Phenolic Acids From Cereals

A test with the microalga Chlorella vulgaris was used to evaluate the allelopathic potential activity of indole alkaloids present in cereals. Gramine, the main indole alkaloid present in barley shows the highest toxicity. A model mechanism of action for auxin was used to analyze the structural effect on the observed toxicity. Germination inhibition on seeds and shoot length inhibition activities of gramine on barley, rye, oat, wheat, lettuce cultivars and the weed Lollium rigidum were measured. Results are discussed in relation to the phytotoxic selectivity of gramine on the seeds germination. In addition, the toxicity of barley aqueous extracts on the germination of oat seed was also determined. Phytotoxicity of the extracts is in agreement with the phytotoxicity of pure gramine.
