Species formation by host shifting in avian malaria parasites
Robert E. Ricklefs,Diana C. Outlaw,Maria Svensson-Coelho,Maria Svensson-Coelho,Matthew C. I. Medeiros,Vincenzo A. Ellis,Steven C. Latta +6 more
TL;DR: Examination of sister lineages in a phylogeny of 181 putative species of malaria parasites of New World terrestrial birds finds that host shifting, often across host genera and families, is the rule, resulting in local shifting of parasite lineages across hosts.

Diversity, Prevalence, and Host Specificity of Avian Plasmodium and Haemoproteus in a Western Amazon Assemblage
Maria Svensson-Coelho,John G. Blake,Bette A. Loiselle,Amanda S. Penrose,Patricia G. Parker,Robert E. Ricklefs +5 more
TL;DR: Within a local Neotropical assemblage of avian haemosporidia, community organization is highly complex and part of this complexity can be attributed to differences in host life history; diversity, particularly of Plasmodium spp.
Journal ArticleDOI
Avian migration and the distribution of malaria parasites in New World passerine birds
Robert E. Ricklefs,Matthew C. I. Medeiros,Vincenzo A. Ellis,Maria Svensson-Coelho,John G. Blake,Bette A. Loiselle,Leticia Soares,Alan Fecchio,Diana C. Outlaw,Peter P. Marra,Steven C. Latta,Gediminas Valkiūnas,Olof Hellgren,Staffan Bensch +13 more
TL;DR: This work investigated the haemosporidian parasite faunas of migratory and resident birds to determine connections among distant parasite faunaas, plausibly brought about by migratory host populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and organization of an avian haemosporidian assemblage in a Neotropical savanna in Brazil.
Alan Fecchio,Marcos Robalinho Lima,Maria Svensson-Coelho,Miguel Ângelo Marini,Robert E. Ricklefs +4 more
TL;DR: The structure and organization of a local avian haemosporidian assemblage in the Cerrado biome of Central Brazil for 5 years was studied and it was found that host species that bred socially presented a higher prevalence of Haemoproteus (Parahaemobroteus) than bird species that breeding in pairs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Host phylogeography and beta diversity in avian haemosporidian (Plasmodiidae) assemblages of the Lesser Antilles
TL;DR: Host phylogeographical structure does not appear to drive within-host beta diversity of haemosporidian lineages, and the array of parasites on one host can reflect the haemOSporidian assemblage on other hosts.
